Flood & Water Damage Restoration Newport & Bristol RI

Satellite image & path of Tropical Storm Alex passing over the Atlantic Ocean.. SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol County is prepared in the event of a major storm this hurricane season. Call us 24/7 when water damages your property.

After making landfall and soaking the southern counties of Florida, the first named storm in the 2022 Hurricane Season formed. It drenched southern Florida with record-breaking rains. As Tropical Storm Alex moves out into the Atlantic, it is no longer a threat to further damage on land. The National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration revised their forecast for hurricane activity for this season to include more active storms than they had previously predicted. According to the Colorado State University scientist, there will be 20 named hurricanes, 10 hurricanes and 5 hurricanes that reach category 3 strength.

SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties can help in case of a major hurricane in New England, or elsewhere in the United States. We know how many people and how much equipment is needed to restore property after a hurricane. When called upon to manage a restoration team, we have years of experience which can be extremely valuable when attempting to restore property on a large scale.

Property owners should make flooding repairs and damage their top priority during major hurricanes and rain events. While many are concerned about the impact of winds and downed trees on their homes, flooding can cause much more damage and be even more destructive to a house or commercial property during a tropical storm or hurricane. Recent years have seen the greatest property damage after large hurricanes made landfall. Although they were weaker, large amounts of rain continued to fall. Each year, flash flooding events cause millions of dollars in property damage.

We hope none of the major hurricanes that are predicted for this hurricane season make landfall, but in the event they do... we will be ready to assist 24/7/365.

Flood damage can cause serious flooding to North Kingston flooring.

4/10/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO employees enter a building with drying equipment. SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties is available when storm-driven water damage affects your property. Call us 24/7.

After a flood, there are hundreds of drying and recovery steps that must be taken to determine what materials can be salvaged and which materials should be removed. It is standard practice to remove as many exposed materials as possible in situations with contaminations exceeding categories 2 or 3. For concerns of category 1 (clean drinking water), this approach is not necessary. These situations can be caused by wind-driven rain from missing windows, or runoff entering through compromised sections of the roof.

Many older homes in the area have hardwood flooring. This can make it a focal point when SERVPRO restorers are addressing flood damages in North Kingston properties. Wood flooring does not require much attention beyond removing the water surface. However, it is possible to dry the material quickly and prevent its replacement.

The use of sophisticated detectors and cameras is necessary to determine whether any material can be salvaged. Surface meters are able to detect water beneath the wood plank's top layer, but advanced techniques like thermography can show where moisture is present. These results and readings can help determine where mats or other drying tools are placed to remove water trapped beneath the plank.

Oak plank flooring, a hardwood flooring type, has a longer lifespan than other types. This is due to its lower porosity. This flooring can be dried if it is the only area that needs drying after flooding damage. We can control airflow and draw moisture from the material by tenting in drying mats.

Flooding can cause damage to many materials and contents in your home. Our SERVPRO team of experts in Newport & Bristol Counties can help you protect more structural elements. Within hours of receiving your initial call, we can start our assessment and respond quickly to your emergency. We are available 24/7 at (401-847-8145

SERVPRO Employees load equipment into a SERVPRO van. SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties is Available 24/7 When Your Property Requires Immediate Attention. Call Us Now.

Our SERVPRO team has been providing restoration services that meet the needs of North Kingston homeowners and businesses for more than 15 years. Our company has grown to be a one-stop shop for disaster recovery, as well as for specific property threats such air quality issues in your HVAC system, biohazardous conditions inside a structure, and the need to rebuild after a significant loss. We have helped many people affected by natural disasters throughout the country and have been able to build a report that has been used with hundreds of businesses and homes.

Fire

North Kingston fires could be very destructive for your home. Our SERVPRO team offers restoration services to help you restore any damaged structure. After first responders have left the site and handed the property over to the customer we can immediately start working with you and the insurance company to obtain the approvals to begin mitigation services as soon as possible. These steps are more effective in minimizing property damage if they are taken quickly.

Mitigation is a critical step for customers' property. It involves many tasks that are happening simultaneously. Our professionals can begin by clearing away the debris from a North Kingston fire-damaged home. We can remove the most dense concentrations of ash, debris and material remnants from the area where the fire started. Once the debris is removed, we can then focus on other cleaning requirements that exposed surfaces may have.

To reduce loss, customers must pay attention to the contents of their North Kingston homes. We offer packing services that allow for more detailed cleaning and deodorization off site, but it is often cheaper to have your belongings restored on the job site. Once the restoration is complete, you can secure them in an undamaged area of the property. Our warehouse offers immersion cleaning methods and an ozone chamber that can neutralize the smoke smells in multiple items.

Storm

We have experienced some of the most extreme weather conditions in Rhode Island. We know how critical it is to quickly respond to North Kingston homes that are damaged by severe storms . Our comprehensive restoration plan after flooding and storm damage offers both mitigation and effective solutions for temporary board-up and tarping.

We are a Large-Loss Provider for the region, which means that we have the resources and personnel to handle all restoration needs after severe storm damage. Our team has extensive experience in helping people and businesses recover from disasters. This includes our emergency responders who have been deployed to other parts of the country to assist with relief efforts after natural disasters or hurricanes. Even flooding solutions in North Kingston homes are possible.

Flooding can occur in many ways. However, the SERVPRO professionals sent to your North Kingston property will help you resolve the problem. We can remove standing water using powerful extractors such as our gas-powered trash pump and electric sump pump. The property is then prepared for drying with a combination heaters, airmovers, dehumidifiers and other special drying tools.

Mold

It is difficult to ignore the seriousness of mold conditions that can exist in any North Kingston property. Mold spores can be set in organic materials and colonized within 48 hours if they are exposed to the right environment factors. Because of the short time frame between the onset of damp conditions and the arrival of spores, it is important to control moisture using drying techniques. It is also crucial to inhibit microbe growth with antimicrobial products.

There are many ways to remediate the mold colonies in your North Kingston house. Sometimes, damaged surfaces may become too badly eroded or deteriorated by mold growth to be salvageable. Our licensed general contractors are able to remove damaged materials and then replace them later after drying and microbial management have been completed.

It is possible to clean a mold-affected surface, but this requires the use of sophisticated abrasive cleaning methods such as soda or media blasting. These techniques can protect the host material from mold deterioration and reduce the intensity of the musty odors that the former colony emits. We can use tools such as our North Kingston thermal fogger and ozone machine to deodorize more directly.

SERVPRO technicians can install containment barriers to prevent cross-contamination when a controlled demolition is required to remove non-salvageable material. Use of tension poles and tape to isolate work areas can be done with polyethelene sheets.

Water

Our technicians are often called out for water damage emergencies. This is why we always have the resources and expertise to respond to these calls. We have the experience and education to help you recover water from your North Kingston home or business.

We use a variety of extraction tools to dry North Kingston homes in the event of severe water loss. Our electric submersible pump can reduce standing water to less then two inches in clean water situations. From there, light wands or wet vacuums are able to resolve the problem and remove any pooling water.

After a water loss event, monitoring is an important part of our North Kingston customers' efficient recovery. Thermal imagery and surface moisture meters can be used to determine the effectiveness of the air movers and humidifiers placed throughout the house. These readings can be used to help our SERVPRO technicians determine the best position for the equipment in order to remove as much moisture and reduce water loss as possible.

You can trust our team as a trusted restoration team to be there for you when you need them. Call our SERVPRO Of Newport & Bristol Counties emergency service unit anytime disaster strikes at (401-847-8145

SERVPRO Construction Services Near Me SERVPRO Commercial Construction Services Are Available In Rhode Island & Massachusetts

While residential construction is usually less expensive, commercial construction requires more time and money. These projects are also bigger, and the size of the building is larger than for a residential project. The right contractor can help you design a commercial space that will meet your needs and budget. Once you have a plan, you can start the construction process and start estimating the cost. The following tips will help you get the most out of your commercial construction project.

Make sure the contractor and client are on the same page with their expectations. Even though commercial construction may be a relatively straightforward process, some clients will require design changes and approval before moving forward. The first step is to create a design, which includes 3D models and renderings. Before proceeding with the actual project, it is important that the client approves the design. In commercial construction, a client should be consulted to ensure that the project will be completed to their satisfaction.

Many business owners are aware of the importance of industry and its contribution to the economy. However, a building loses its freshness and flair as it ages. Some business owners may opt to remodel an existing building or add another structure. These projects are more complex and time-consuming than a small-scale one, but SERVPRO understands the importance of getting it right. A contractor should be able to handle all aspects of the construction process.

Storm Damage Restoration Near Me SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties is the areas #1 Storm Damage Restoration Team

Newport, Middletown, and Jamestown are some of Rhode Island’s best known and most populous islands. These islands are connected by beautiful bridges that span across the Narragansett bay and are home to some of Rhode Island’s most picturesque landscapes and homes. But, as with most oceanfront communities, these islands are susceptible from flooding storm surge and heavy rains.

Tropical Storm Ida provided us a reminder of how powerful storms can inundate islands like Newport Rhode Island and Jamestown Rhode Island causing flooding and damage to homes and businesses. The slow moving tropical storm dropped several inches of rain in a short time, in some places up to 8” of rain fell in less than 12 hours. Thousands of homes and businesses across the eastern seaboard were affected by the storm and experienced some form of storm flooding.

Our response team was available throughout Tropical Storm Ida and began restoration processes as soon as it was safe to do so. We are one of New England and New York’s most experienced storm restoration team. We have worked to help restore homes and commercial properties in Rhode Island and New York after superstorm Sandy. We provided support and restoration services in Houston after Hurricane Harvey in 2017 as well as in Florida after hurricanes Irma and Michael.

Commercial Storm Restoration is where we set ourselves apart from the competition. We help your business recover quickly, and keep you operational, and work in multiple shifts to complete your restoration quickly and efficiently. We are especially helpful for business owners that are already aware of vulnerabilities in their properties. In these scenarios a Project Manager will develop an Emergency Restoration Protocol for your properties in the event of a storm. This allows us to quickly determine the best course of action and preparations needed when the weather forecast is unfavorable. Call our office today for more information.

fire damaging a residential home No matter how large or small the fire in your kitchen, it can cause significant damage that is difficult to clean up. The layer of soot left

No matter how large or small the fire in your kitchen, it can cause significant damage that is difficult to clean up. The layer of soot left on surfaces is one of the most frustrating aspects. Professional restoration companies should be able to quickly clean up after a fire and then they can handle cleaning up walls and ceilings. If soot is left on chrome furniture, it can cause irreparable damage to the rest of the furnishings.

It can also be dangerous if improper cleaning techniques are used. It can:

  • Inject odorous soot deeper into surfaces
  • Cause stains
  • Furniture with restoration potential should be destroyed.

What is the best dry cleaning sponge for fire damage clean-up?

SERVPRO techs can bring dry cleaning sponges to your home in order to restore fire damage. High heat fires can cause light and powdery residues to organic materials. Liquids can exacerbate the problem by causing the residues to stick to the surfaces and making it more difficult to remove.

Techs use dry cleaning sponges to remove the soot from surfaces. The techs turn the sponge each time and dispose of any residues. This allows painted walls to be restored without the need for removal. It also saves homeowners the time and money of replacing them. The techs can use a sealant to give a new start to walls and ceilings that have particulate embedded too deep.

You must act quickly to minimize the damage and restore your home to its original condition as soon as possible.

Call SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties today at (401) 847-8145 to speak with a certified technician who will respond to any fire damage to your home.

Restoring Your Home From A Water Damage.

8/30/2021 (Permalink)

Indoor flood caused by broken pipes Without extraction, dragging wet carpets and rugs from a property can cause water damage and worsen an already difficult situation.

SERVPRO is a water extraction expert company that extracts water from carpets and rugs that have been soaked.

This can be a problem for property managers, adjusters, insurance agents and other professionals. It will almost certainly end up being thrown out. First, a heavy carpet or rug that is wet requires more effort to move and remove.

Second, water extraction reduces the weight significantly. This makes it easier for technicians to lift the material and reduces injuries on site. By removing water, we can reduce the total weight of the waste, which helps to lower waste removal fees.

We are effectively removing all water from carpets and rugs that have been wet. This is an essential step to prevent mold growth and structural damage.

Can Professionals Get Rid of Odors After Fire Damage to North Kingston Homes?

Room with fire damage Fire can leave your property with many issues. Trust our experts to bring your home back to its original state "Like it never even happened."

SERVPRO's Odor Control Technicians Know How to Combat Odors After Fire Damage to Your North Kingston Home

Combating odors after fire damage to your North Kingston home can be quite a challenge. SERVPRO technicians apply scientific principles to understand the behavior of odor particles and design an effective deodorizing strategy to suit the specific conditions.

SERVPRO technicians understand that odor-causing smoke particles formed after fire damage to your North Kingston home can be microscopic. The smaller size of the particles allows them to penetrate deeper into porous surfaces after extensive smoke damage. The deodorant particles also must be small enough to reach the odor-causing particles and neutralize them. However, size is not the only factor determining how the odor-causing particles penetrate materials.

Factors That Help Smoke Particles Penetrate Materials in Fire Damaged Homes in North Kingston

Some of the important factors helping smoke particles penetrate surfaces of your North Kingston home that SERVPRO technicians recognize include-

  • The porosity of the surface- Porous surfaces are more likely to absorb odors than non-porous surfaces.
  • Amount of the residue- Heavier the residue after a fire and smoke damage, the greater the surface area of material it can impact and more difficult it is for SERVPRO techs to neutralize
  • Exposure time- Longer exposure of the residue allows the odor-causing particles to penetrate deeper, making it difficult for SERVPRO to deodorize during house fire cleanup.
  • Heat- Hotter particles can penetrate surfaces deeper. Also, porous surfaces tend to expand due to heat, making it easy for the particles to penetrate.

SERVPRO Equipment and technician You can depend on our technicians to respond quickly to remove water and restore the damages it has caused.

SERVPRO Offers Quick and Efficient Water Removal from North Kingston Homes

Water removal from your North Kingston home needs to happen fast to prevent any secondary damage to the structure. Hiring a professional restoration company like SERVPRO can help you not only to get rid of the water but also residual moisture and lingering odors.

After water removal from your North Kingston home, SERVPRO technicians ensure that the structure and contents are dried properly. We use various equipment such as dehumidifiers, air movers, and heating equipment to create conditions that favor faster drying during water cleanup. Higher humidity of air slows down the drying process, and it is important to control it for faster drying.

Common Terms You Will Hear SERVPRO Techs Use During Water Damage Remediation of your North Kingston Home

Drying is a major part of the restoration process. SERVPRO techs can dry the structures so efficiently as they understand Psychrometry- the study of air and its properties. Understanding some terms might help you understand the process better.

  • Humidity ratio- It is the actual amount of moisture in the air. It is represented in grains of moisture per pound (gpp) of air. SERVPRO techs aim to create conditions with a low humidity ratio so that drying can be faster during water damage repairs at your North Kingston home.
  • Relative humidity (RH)- The quantity of moisture the air currently holds at a given temperature. It is usually represented as a percentage of the maximum moisture the air can hold when saturated at the same temperature. SERVPRO technicians try to control the RH of the air by altering the temperature using portable heaters.
  • Dew Point- The temperature at which water vapor from air begins to condense. SERVPRO tech always keeps the drying temperature above the dew point to avoid condensate formation.

SERVPRO Offers Newport Residents a Fast and Trustworthy Water Removal after Flood Damage

Flood damage to your Newport home necessitates water removal from your property before SERVPRO professionals can begin the restoration process. Floodwater often contains suspended solids and other debris that can be removed with the help of special pumps.

SERVPRO technicians use different extraction equipment to remove standing water after flood damage to your Newport home. The equipment used depends on the amount of water to be removed, solids present, and how high the water needs to be lifted. While some pumps can handle a lot of suspended solids, others have a higher water lifting capacity. SERVPRO techs also pay close attention to the level of contamination in the water and take appropriate precautions during water cleanup

Types of Pumps SERVPRO Uses During Flood Restoration of Your Newport Home

Some of the most common pumps that we use in Newport homes include-

  • Self-Priming trash pumps- These are used during water removal services when there is much material suspended in water. However, they have a limited lifting capacity and are useful when the suction lift is less than 25′. The pumps are powered using gas or diesel and variable in sizes.
  • High-pressure pumps- SERVPRO technicians use these pumps when a high lift is desired, but they don't handle suspended solids well. We use them to extract water from basements and underground garages.
  • Submersible pumps- One of the most common types of pumps that SERVPRO techs use. They run on electricity, are quieter than other pumps, and available in a wide range of capacity (can remove 100 to 18,000 gallons per minute). We use these when water is removed from occupied spaces.

Advanced Extraction Tools Promote the Efficient Removal of Trapped Moisture in Flooring Materials of Newport Homes

Water removal often brings up the pressing need for surface water elimination after situations like appliance failure or flooding, but that is not the extent of the demand for most properties. Without adequate specialty removal tools, we cannot successfully resolve:

  • Water removal services
  • Flood restoration
  • Basement flooding
  • Burst pipes

How Do Weighted Extractors Help Remove Trapped Moisture?

For water removal in Newport homes, specifically fibrous materials like carpeted floors, specific and special extraction tools are necessary.

Weighted extractors play a significant role in reducing trapped moisture in carpeted floors and the other elements of these flooring systems. Often, these machines work by the weight of the operating technician standing on the unit. With an onboard vacuum, the extractor forces carpet and padding against the subflooring beyond to force trapped moisture to the surface for removal.

Our Responding Team Can Carefully Restore and Protect Historic Homes and Businesses in North Kingston

With the settlements that have been around long before the American Revolutionary War, Rhode Island is home to many historic properties and landmarks that played a part in the country's history. The possibility of water damage to these buildings can be threatening, especially when property management seeks to preserve original building materials and appearances as much as possible. The Kingston Historic District is home to many structures that have been around since the 17th and 18th centuries. When water damages occur, our experienced team can help with:

  • Water damage remediation
  • Flood restoration
  • Basement flooding
  • Emergency services water damage
  • Ceiling leaks
  • Burst pipes

Preserving the History of Kingston with Protected Landmarks

The majority of the Kingston village became part of this established historic district in 1959, earmarking many properties to be landmarks or culturally significant to the history of Washington County, Kingston, or the country. While many of these structures can be attractive to those studying multiple types of architecture, such as Greek Revival, Victorian, and Colonial, some have a history that makes them tourist attractions. Some of these locations include:

  • Elisha Reynolds House – Constructed in 1738, this would be the home of many higher political figures in Rhode Island. It would also be the final stop for George Washington and his officers on the way to Newport to meet with Rochambeau and plan the Siege of Yorktown.
  • Tootell House – Many others have taken to calling this well-known property King's Row or Hedgerow over the years. It was built in the early 1930s and featured a distinct Colonial Revival architecture. It has been a historic landmark and attraction since mid-2000.
  • Washington County Courthouse – Constructed in 1892, has been deemed a historical landmark for the state since 1992. The building features Romanesque architecture and now exists as the Courthouse Center for the Arts.

How Can Trapped Water Get Removed During Water Mitigation?

When surface water and moisture migrate into materials and become trapped, this can be a more substantial concern for responding technicians. Water mitigation for North Kingston homes often focuses on several surface treatment strategies culminating in the water removal services for trapped moisture pockets in porous flooring and wall system materials.

How Do Floor Drying Mats Work?

The objective of drying mats is to bring the relative humidity value of hardwoods back to their desired range. It is only then can the materials get preserved and protected. Prolonged exposure and oversaturation can lead to warping and bloating of planks, making them impossible to restore. Mats get placed perpendicularly to the seams of the floor plank to maximize their output and production over multiple interlocking flooring pieces. Tenting allows us to remove trapped moisture more efficiently and continually monitor drying progress.

Because of how destructive trapped water and standing water can be, water mitigation for North Kingston properties fixates on water removal services and clean-up strategies. Our experienced SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties team of professionals can help however the property needs at (401) 847-8145.

SERVPRO Helps Assess and Recommend Suitable Solutions for Mold Damage in North Kingstown

In 1674, the colonial government founded the town of Kings Towne, which covered present-day Narragansett, South Kingstown, Exeter, and North Kingstown. Later, Kings Towne was split, forming North Kingstown and South Kingstown. The development of the area started when Richard Smith and Roger Williams settled in the area and established trading posts. Roger was a staunch advocate of the separation of state and church, religious freedoms, and fair dealings with Native Americans.

North Kingstown has played various roles with significance nationally. For instance, the Navy Construction Battalion, or Seabees as they are popularly known, was based in Davisville. Seabees excelled in the Vietnam War, considering they were the first among the American forces to deploy. Their most recognizable achievement in that conflict was constructing clandestine camps for Special Forces deep in the Vietnam jungles. The Seabee Museum & Memorial Park commemorates the efforts of these forces. The town was also the birthplace of Gilbert Stuart, the artist who painted George Washington's impression on the one-dollar bill.

North Kingstown Monuments

Exploring the town gives visitors a chance to view structures from different eras commemorating various activities popular at the time.

  • Smith's Castle

It is the oldest plantation house still standing in America. The castle stands on the land Roger Williams bought from the Narragansett tribe and established a trading post. Later, Richard Smith bought the property and built the fortified house known today as the Smith Castle. You can visit the castle to walk the trails, explore the gardens or get some items from the gift shop.

  • Casey Farm

The property is one of the oldest working farms in the area that started operations in 1702 and was owned by different generations of the Casey family until 1955. The unique thing about the farm is its 10-mile dry-laid stone wall. Visitors can participate in community-supported agricultural programs or purchase organic produce.

  • Gilbert Stuart Home and Museum

The home where Gilbert Stuart, the portraitist, spent the first six years of his life, still stands today. His father owned the home and operated a water-driven snuff mill in the basement. Later the home turned to a tavern when the family left the area leading to the loss of the wheel and the mill. In 1931, architectural historian Norman Isham started restoring the property and installed a new wheel and snuff mill. Visitors can explore colonial-style furniture and reproductions of some of Gilbert Stuart’s works.

Why is Water Removal & Drying in Newport so Difficult in Humid Conditions?

Water from a leaking pipe or overflowing basin can soak a floor in no time at all. It is essential to remove all of the access water as soon as possible. Many clients mop up the water and then wait for the floor and carpet to dry independently.

SERVPRO is often called a few days later after the initial water removal in Newport homes. Homeowners are concerned that the carpets and flooring are still wet, and often there is already a musty smell. Conditions inside the house, especially in the area of the leak, are very humid.

The musty smell indicates that mold colonies have already begun growing. The damage to carpeting, drywall, and even subfloor may require replacement. High humidity in a room lowers the rate of drying significantly. SERVPRO can immediately –

  • Install high capacity dehumidifiers to dry the air
  • Add high capacity air movers to blow dry air over the flooring
  • Float carpets to accelerate drying and inspect cavities for moisture.
  • Measure the relative humidity as water is drawn from flooring materials and walls

Once everything is dry, we inspect all contents and structure for permanent damage signs and prepare recommendations for repairs and restoration.

Basements Take More Time to Dry Than the Rest of the House

Many of our North Kingston clients express concerns about why it takes longer to dry their basements than the rest of the house after a water leak. All of the excess water has been removed. Only moisture in the air, moisture in the structure, and moisture in the contents remain.

SERVPRO trains our water removal technicians in Psychometrics, which is the management of three conditions –

  • Humidity,
  • Airflow and
  • Temperature.

Warmer temperatures can hold more water than cooler air typically found in basements. Evaporation of moisture in cooler conditions takes longer in colder air. Drying the contents, including flooring materials and structures in basements, is less efficient than other rooms in the home at lower temperatures.

What is the Difference Between Mold Remediation and Removal?

mold damaged furniture. SERVPRO technicians are IICRC certified for any type of disaster. Get your home back to preloss conditions.

SERVPRO offers an honest mold remediation service

If you notice signs of mold in your home, it is essential to call for help before the fungus spreads any further.

When you need mold remediation in North Kingstown, it is vital to choose a company that is honest about the results it can achieve. SERVPRO offers mold remediation rather than mold removal. This is because complete mold removal is not possible:

  • Mold spores quickly spread and start new colonies no matter how careful you are.
  • The fungus is present in nature, and therefore no one can prevent it from re-entering your home.
  • Mold can grow in hidden places if the conditions are correct.

Although complete mold removal is not possible, a good remediation service can deal with the current mold growth and reduce the risk of it coming back.

As well as cleaning up mold, SERVPRO technicians monitor moisture levels in your home and dry it thoroughly. Removing moisture in this way reduces the risk of mold resurgence. We also apply industry-standard anti-fungal treatments when needed. Typically, after mold remediation, the indoor air quality is improved, whether you notice it or not.

For mold remediation, call SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties at (401) 847-8145.

SERVPRO helps with water removal in North Kingstown

When your business is flooded, either by bad weather or a plumbing problem, water removal is key to a successful restoration.

SERVPRO is on hand to help with water removal in your North Kingstown business. The more water we can remove, the easier it is to dry your property and restore your premises “Like it never even happened.”

The choice between a portable or a truck-mounted extractor is an important one:

  • Portable extractors are more flexible because we can take them into most parts of the building.
  • Portable extractors need an electricity supply.
  • Truck-mounted extractors are more powerful in the case of severe flooding.
  • Truck-mounted extractors use the work vehicle’s fuel.

If possible, it is better to use portable units for high rise buildings because of their hose length and flexibility. Truck-mounted units are noisier and less flexible but can provide extra suction power. We train our teams to assess the situation and pick the best tool for the job.

For water removal in your business, call SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties at (401) 847-8145.

Newport is a beautiful coastal city worth exploring.

If you are looking for a seaside getaway, look no further than Newport. This elegant coastal city on Rhode Island has long been a popular destination for people wanting to enjoy the sea air.

Newport was founded in 1639. By the mid-nineteenth century, it was a popular spot with wealthy people who wanted to build homes by the sea. During this Gilded Age, moneyed families built many stunning colonial houses by the coast. Wealthy families such as the Vanderbilts, Wideners, and Astors constructed "cottages," which in reality bore more resemblance to the grand palaces of Europe.

The best way to see Newport

The best way to enjoy the beauty of Newport is by taking a stroll along the Cliff Walk. This public path stretches for 3.5 miles along the coast and is one of the city's most famous tourist attractions. You can walk the whole thing in two or three hours, or pick some of the best spots to explore:

  • 1st Beach is at the beginning of the Cliff Walk and is one of Newport's most popular beaches. The beach has a carousel and hosts festivals, concerts, and a volleyball tournament during the summer. The beach is quieter and an ideal place for walking or exercising your dog in the fall and winter.
  • Bailey's Beach is the most exclusive in Newport. During the Gilded Age, members of the elite families bathed here, so they did not have to mix with the ordinary people! The beach is still private today, but there are some stunning views nearby. You can also visit Rejects Beach. This is the Northeastern part of Bailey's Beach and is open to the public. Despite the name, it is a lovely place to stop off.
  • Bellevue Avenue sits at the opposite end of Cliff Walk from 1st Beach. Here you can view the famous luxury mansions such as The Elms, Rosewood, and Marble House.

How flooding affects the Cliff Walk

Being so close to the coast means stunning views and fresh sea air, but unfortunately, the Newport climate also means some flooding. Hurricane Sandy hit the area in 2012 and washed away large sections of the Cliff Walk, which had to close. After a $5.2 million restoration project, the Cliff Walk reopened in 2014.

Floods are an ongoing issue in Newport, with rising tides putting historic homes at risk. Properties near the coast often flood, especially as some of the older houses are as little as 4 feet above sea level.

SERVPRO is quick to deal with flood damage

SERVPRO Commits to Approach Fire Damage in North Kingston with Restoration in Mind, Working Hard to Bring Our Treasured Centuries-Old Structures Back from Destruction

Business and residential areas in North Kingston include neighborhoods and smaller villages within the larger town's footprint. If they now seem like quiet, quaint spaces within a 21st-century city, your perceptions would not be wrong. But you also might not know about the fascinating details in the histories of these subdivisions in North Kingston that relate very impactful events that stretch back far more than three hundred years.

Who Were the Original Inhabitants of Wickford Village?

Before European contact, the lands comprising Wickford were hunted and fished by the indigenous Narragansett people. The Narragansett language died out in the 1800s, so it is difficult to prove the precise meaning of the tribe's name, but many modern members of the tribe believe it means "people of the little points and bays." It is not surprising that their name alludes to a jagged shoreline, as Wickford Village arose around an incredibly protected natural harbor.

Who Developed the Wickford Village Area Post-European Contact?

The Wickford Village portion of North Kingston owes its name to the town of Wickford in Essex, England. Situated on the west side of Narragansett Bay, the current village is just 20 minutes away from Newport, Rhode Island, connected by two bridges. What is now known as Wickford Village was settled in 1637. Roger Williams, a Puritan minister, author, and theologian, established Providence Plantations in the area, eventually known as the Colony of Rhode Island. As part of this plan, he bought land from the Narragansett sachem or chief Canonicus including part of Wickford's location. Williams adhered to an abolitionist viewpoint, studied the Narragansett language, and tried to develop the area consistent with

  • Religious freedom
  • Separation of church and state
  • Fair dealings with indigenous peoples

Williams and another Puritan minister, Richard Smith, originally from Gloucester, England, founded trading posts near the harbor, and residential and business growth followed. Miller purchased Williams's post in 1651.

What Happened During Smith's Control of Wickford Village?

After a stay in Taunton in the Massachusetts Colony, Smith arrived in Wickford Village in 1637, the same year as Williams. Smith constructed a gabled house, which Williams spoke of as the first English-styled residence in the village and the greater North Kingston. Smith fortified his home, resulting in its later moniker as Smith's Castle. Smith obtained more land during his tenure in Wickford, developing what he called Cocumscussoc Plantation. The plantation centered the growing number of  European settlers' church, political, and social life. As unrest with indigenous peoples intensified, a European settler named Joshua Tefft was executed at Smith's Castle in 1676 for fighting on the side of the Narragansetts.

Did Wickford Suffer Damage During King Philip's War?

Homes built under Smith's expansion of the Wickford settlement now contained within North Kingston were targets during the 1675–1678 time frame of King Philip's War, a conflict with the Naragannset and other indigenous peoples. Smith's Castle burned completely, and many other buildings faced destruction. Smith's son Richard Smith Jr. rebuilt in 1678 on the foundation laid nearly 30 years earlier. The second Smith's Castle is still in place, gaining fame as one of the most visited spots in the Wickford Village area. The majority of the village's historic homes and buildings built between King Philip's War and the American Revolution still house residents and provide space for the village's business district. Remarkably, almost all retain their original foundations.

What Role Did Wickford Village in North Kingston's Experience During the Revolutionary War?

On Poplar Point, jutting out into the maze of islands to the east of Wickford Harbor, there is a lighthouse and a plaque. The plaque, dedicated in 1936 by the Pettaquamscutt chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, describes the contribution of the Wickford Gun, a cannon active in skirmishes between the Revolutionary forces and the British. The cannon arrived in March of 1776 from the brand-new State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. The Newtown Rangers were a motley group of young boys and older men who determined to strike a blow in the British conflict. They made it their job to learn how to use the cannon. Their use of the Wickford gun featured:

  • Establishment of three fortified locations, as the cannon was portable, including
    • Poplar Point  -- from which the British were driven after a direct hit by the gun
    • Quidnessett
    • Barber's Heights
  • Persistence, as the cannon needed repair after Tory sabotage:
    • Master blacksmith Samuel Bissell "rode" the cannon making repairs at the rest of the Newton Rangers moved the gun to Judith's Point.
    • The gun fired many rounds at the grounded British ship Syrene, resulting in all 166 men onboard surrendering to the Newtown Rangers.

Is Fire Damage Restoration of Historic Buildings Possible in North Kingston?

Wickford and the surrounding North Kingston's current inhabitants prefer fire damage restoration over teardowns and new construction. Residents honor the history and sacrifice of the early settlers and the 18th-century revolution. Many of the centuries-old buildings are owned by private citizens. They rely on our team's expertise to turn smoke and soot damage around, bringing properties back to their former glory.

This Charming North Kingston Town Is Perfect For A Relaxing Getaway

North Kingston is known for its beauty. With picturesque lakes, rolling green hills, and of course the stunning fall foliage, it is no wonder that New England attracts people who are ready for a different pace of life.

If you are coming to North Kingston for a visit, look no further as it is the perfect place to base yourself for your trip. This gorgeous little town is full of old-fashioned New England charm and is overflowing with fascinating historical buildings.

A Cozy Town In The Smallest State

Rhode Island is the smallest state, and as such, its towns tend to be little, quaint, and pretty. Kingston has a population of just 6,974 and is located within the bounds of the larger town of South Kingstown.

Kings Towne (as it was called then) has a long history, being founded in 1674. The town was split into North and South Kingstown in 1722, and then in 1742, the village of Exeter split off from the main town.

Explore History In and Around North Kingston

You are never far away from history in North Kingston. The area is chock a block with fascinating historical sites, which attract many history buffs. To start with, why not check out:

  • Smith's Castle, which is one of the oldest houses in Rhode Island. Smith's Castle was built in 1678, near to the original trading post of Roger Williams, the founder of Rhode Island. Smith's Castle has a bit of a gruesome history, being the only site on American soil where someone was hung, drawn, and quartered for treason. It has also been a dairy farm and is now a museum.
  • The village of Wakefield, which was first settled in the mid-eighteenth century. Wakefield started with a stagecoach stop and a tavern and quickly became the site of a snuff mill. Wakefield became a regional center of commerce until the mid-twentieth century when shops started moving out of the village. It has biking and walking trails and is a peaceful place to while away some time.
  • Peace Dale, a town from 1793 where you can see a wide range of architectural styles. On a stroll through Peace Dale, you can see Gothic Revival, Colonial Revival, Romanesque, and Greek Revival properties.

Rhode Island – Birthplace Of An Iconic Portrait

If you have ever used a one-dollar bill, then you have seen the well-known portrait of George Washington on it. The painter of that portrait, Gilbert Stuart, was a New England man who showed promise as a painter from a young age. When he was fourteen, he met the renowned Scottish portrait artist Cosmo Alexander, who tutored young Stuart in art.

Throughout his life, Stuart painted more than 1000 portraits, including portraits of six presidents. He wished to paint a portrait of George Washington so that he could support his family financially. He painted a series of portraits, which were so well received that he was kept busy for many years replicating them for clients who were happy to pay top dollar. One of these portraits of Washington graces the dollar bill today.

Stuart was a bold painter who worked directly on the canvas without first laying down a sketch. This was very unusual for the time. Gilbert Stuart was born in Saunderstown, a village that lies within modern Kingstown. Saunderstown is a tiny, quaint village where you can:

  • Visit the Gilbert Stuart Birthplace to see where the painter was born. The house dates from 1750 and is now a lovely museum. There is a welcome center and art gallery so you can learn more about Gilbert Stuart. There are also relaxing grounds where you can see a millpond, herb garden, and operational grist and snuff mills. Walk the nature trails to discover the historic boat dock, a timber dam, and a Colonial burial ground. On Sundays, junior docents (children and adolescents) dress up in period attire and give house tours.
  • Stop off at Casey Farm, where Daniel Coggeshall first built a home in 1725. When a local man named Silas Casey married Coggeshall's daughter, he also took ownership of the farm. The farm has remained undivided ever since and belonged to one of Casey's descendants until they gifted it to the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities. Today, you can visit the farm and enjoy a guided tour of the fields and historic houses. Casey's is still a working farm, which provides organic fruits and vegetables to the surrounding area.
  • Visit the historic district to see the beautiful wood-framed homes, the country store, and the early 20th-century post office.

Are There Viable Ways To Keep Costs Manageable When Dealing with A Fire Damage Incident in North Kingston?

SERVPRO Combines Simple and Advanced Restoration Techniques to Fix Fire Damage in North Kingston Properties Efficiently

Fires are highly destructive because of the soiling and material deterioration they leave in the properties that they affect. Even a small stove fire can have far reaching effects. Restoration of such damage is not only time consuming but also costly. When you involve SERVPRO in the restoration of your North Kingston property, it is possible to save time and money.

What determines the destructiveness of fire damage incidents in North Kingston?
Every fire incident in North Kingston unfolds differently, so the complexities that develop might vary. From the vast experiences our SERVPRO professionals have, we understand the common issues that influence damages, including:
    •    The time that is taken to respond to the incident
    •    The materials affected by the fire
    •    The processes used to quell the fire

A fire is not just destructive when it is burning but even in the aftermath of the incident. For instance, the residues produced by the combustion process, including soot and tar, have corrosive properties that stain materials or cause deterioration in other forms such as rusting of metallic materials. If you have metallic accessories such as chrome door handles, faucets, or other kinds of trim in the areas where most of the residues accumulate, you might incur high costs making replacements if you delay the response.

Firefighting processes might also cause problems despite being necessary for stopping the damage from flames and heat. Such damage depends on the degree of moisture saturation materials and contents in the house reach. Residues from firefighting chemicals such as foam can also cause some damages.

Are there viable options for reducing the damages that develop?
    •    Starting the restoration process early
    •    Cleaning most of the soiled items
    •    Isolating materials based on the level of damage
    •    Drying wet materials or using other approaches to manage moisture

Unlike damages that develop as the fire burns, the damages that develop later are controllable. Taking action soon after the incident happens is one of the best ways to minimize damages. Our SERVPRO crews can arrive at your property within four hours if you notify us in time. Starting water extraction at such an early stage or setting up dehumidifiers helps manage moisture levels in the building, thus limiting the negative effects it has on the exposed materials. For example, it is possible to stop mold development, which starts within 24 to 48 hours, by eliminating moisture from the building. Applying antimicrobial products at this stage also helps check microbial growth.

A casual look at fire-damaged items or materials rarely reveals the true extent of the problem. For instance, the depth of charring, odor penetration, or the level of staining is not easy to address when everything is covered in soot. It is possible to waste time trying to clean or restore unsalvageable items while overlooking the salvageable ones. Such oversight might exacerbate damages. A straightforward solution our SERVPRO crews use to resolve this issue is grouping the affected items in your house based on the level of damage before starting any restorative steps. We separate items into groups of salvageable, unsalvageable, and questionable items. Since the decision to restore or dispose of the items with questionable damages is not easy to make, we set aside such items for restoration after other issues are addressed.

Which materials may amplify the level of damages you have to deal with after a fire incident?
    •    Synthetic materials
    •    Old materials
    •    Porous materials

When fire burns plastics or synthetic fabrics, the smoke produced has different properties, unlike fire from natural materials like wood or fabrics such as cotton. Synthetic materials tend to produce wet smoke residues which adhere to surfaces requiring specialized cleaning processes to remove the residues. In some cases, the only option to restore such items is to resurface the affected item.

Our SERVPRO professionals evaluate the residues deposited on surfaces to determine the best removal procedures. We can remove residues physically through vacuuming, dusting with absorbent materials, or agitate with air or high water pressure. We can also remove the residues chemically using chemical sponges, detergents, or specially formulated cleaning products.

Why is it challenging to restore old materials affected by fire damage?
Surfaces such as walls or furniture items made from older materials might be harder to restore through cleaning since residues penetrate beyond the surface. Such outcomes develop because aging tends to open up pores in materials or finishes applied on surfaces such as paint. Deeply embedded residues require advanced cleaning techniques to remove.

The issues that determine whether a fire restoration exercise is cost-effective or not might only vary slightly. SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties helps make the distinction, thus choosing the solutions most appropriate for your property. Call us at (401) 847-8145 to help. We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster!

Could Recent Flooding in Newport Cause My Roof Problems?

10/22/2020 (Permalink)

Homes in flood waters Regardless of how your property was affected by flood waters, SERVPRO is the effective company for water removal services. Call right away.

Many Structures in Newport Sustain Flood Damage in Unexpected Locations, Including Upper Regions of the Property.

When flooding occurs in our area around Newport, the water forcefully pushes against anything in its path. This includes neighborhood homes and businesses. Additionally, the effects of such intense forces that weaken the structural members are compounded by elevated humidity that can leave a property susceptible to secondary damage.

Property owners might notice cracks in upper story walls or that the roof now leaks in their home after flooding transpires in the Newport area. The flooding may have twisted the frame, and humidity and an abundance of interior flooding often cause issues with fixtures, plaster, drywall, and paneling. These two conditions can intensify each other, making any pre-existing deficits even more pronounced. SERVPRO’s crew is skilled in mitigating the damages to walls and roofing. The integrity of your roof is crucial to the fitness of your house, especially during the winter months. The risk of ice dams developing increases when gaps exist between the outside and your home’s interior.

SERVPRO performs various types of services on homes damaged by flooding. These include both internal and external repairs.

  •   Opening walls makes framework structures accessible to brace areas, so they no longer move out of alignment.
  •   We repair cracked areas and replace wallpapered or paneled sections. This can include ceilings.
  •   Repairs to the roof can include more than shingles. We may need to dry the attic crawl space with heaters and dehumidifiers or replace insulation before removing the protective tarp.

SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties knows how to work with you to restore roofing and other structural damage and make everything "Like it never even happened." Ensuring that your home’s structure becomes stable and secure is as important to us as it is to you. Call (401) 847-8145 for an evaluation of your house and expert guidance on your options.

Commercial Flood Damage Can Cause Business Interruption and Expense. SERVPRO Helps Newport Companies Recover Quickly after Flood Events.

Why is drying difficult in commercial premises?
When a large-scale water event affects your Newport business, it can be frustrating waiting to return to work. Flood losses to company premises can sometimes be more challenging than residential flooding, but they do not have to take longer. The main difficulty in dealing with water intrusion in larger spaces is an inability to effectively control the indoor atmosphere. Many types of the dehumidifier are designed for smaller, residential spaces. SERVPRO technicians have access to more extensive commercial desiccant units that can be placed outside the premises and ducted into the affected area.

When are desiccant dehumidifiers used for property drying?
    •    Desiccant equipment performs better in cold and dry conditions than refrigerant dehumidifiers.
    •    They are capable of producing the driest air of any dehumidifier.
    •    Commercial dehumidifiers can be fitted with ductwork to ensure doorways remain secure.

How are industrial dehumidifiers set up in a business property?
Usually, a technician dealing with commercial flood damage in your Newport premises performs extraction and air-movement as a priority. Dehumidifiers are used to reduce the humidity and complete the drying process. Often a large dehumidifier is ducted from the outside of the building with smaller portable units placed in wet areas inside. A flood can impact all areas of your business, which is why SERVPRO uses multiple resources to ensure it dries quickly, and you can resume work as soon as possible.

How do commercial desiccant dehumidifiers work?
    •    Air passes over absorbent materials like silica gel to extract moisture.
    •    Heaters evaporate collected moisture, which is then vented outside the premises.
    •    The low level of humidity afforded by desiccants makes them ideal for drying large surface areas of concrete or other framing materials.

If your property suffers from a flood event, drying it quickly could save you further expense. Contact SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties at (401) 847-8145.

How Can A Newport Homeowner Know The Chosen Water Restoration Approach Is Appropriate?

9/27/2020 (Permalink)

water damaged home A single incident of water damage at your North Kingston, South Kingstown, or Bristol home can be resolved differently.

Enhanced Training and Experience Ensures SERVPRO Offers the Best Water Damage Restoration Services in Newport

Once you realize that water has intruded into unwanted areas of your house, causing damages, the next step is to ascertain the means to address those damages. For most people seeking assistance from a professional water restoration company is the preferred approach. However, you may want to progress further and investigate the methods used to fix the damage to ensure you get the best solutions. SERVPRO is one of the premier restoration companies serving Newport residents.

Why should the water Damage restoration method matter to a Newport homeowner?
You might notice wide-ranging damages in your Newport house after a water intrusion incident. The damages might also affect all sorts of materials in furniture, structural materials, and even appliances. What most homeowners fail to realize is that some of the damages can be fixed in different ways, and each alternative solution might present some advantages and disadvantages. SERVPRO chooses the best approaches for the benefit of the homeowner.

What are some examples of different methods used to address the same problem?
    •    Removing items or drying them in place
    •    Restoring wet materials or replacing them
    •    The use of different chemical agents to stop microbial development

After removing the water that intrudes into your property, you have to find a way to deal with the materials that remain wet. You might think of initiating drying procedures in the affected areas as the best solution, but that might not apply in every case. Materials have different levels of porosity and other physical conditions, meaning that although they might all absorb water, some might retain more moisture than others do. Thus, conventional drying with the materials in place might not deliver the expected results. Removing materials for drying purposes can result in unnecessary damages. The decision made must, therefore, strike the correct balance.

Our firm is IICRC certified. We also have technicians qualified in Water Restoration and Applied Structural Drying, which equips us with sufficient knowledge on how to handle different materials when they are affected by water. We also have various equipment to handle both approaches so we can choose in-place drying, if it is practical, or remove the affected materials for offsite drying and thus addressing any problem, “Like it never even happened.”

Is the decision to restore or replace the affected materials optional?
Water affects a wide range of materials in houses, including:
    •    Drywall
    •    Wood
    •    Insulation
    •    Carpets and pad

You may opt to change some of the materials in your house after they are exposed to water and damaged irreversibly. Choosing whether to replace or restore such materials may not seem optional since such a decision is driven by damage. However, you might want to ask what determines that damage to an item or material is irreversible. In some cases, it is the restoration methods available that works or fail to deliver the results you would expect.

Our SERVPRO technicians are highly-trained, allowing them to utilize different restoration techniques to save materials rather than declaring them damaged beyond repair whenever we notice some damage. In some cases, the speed of restoration determines whether materials can be salvaged or disposed of since the damage is beyond repair. For instance, a material such as drywall crumbles when exposed to water over extended periods. Our technicians can prevent such an outcome by evacuating standing water before it causes permanent damage by using high-efficiency water removal equipment, including:
    •    High-speed pumps
    •    Truck-mounted water extractors
    •    Portable water extractors

What choices are necessary when dealing with microbial growth?
Water intrusion in a house can kick-start different microbial development processes, including mold growth. There is a need to address such processes directly, even as you perform other procedures such as drying excess moisture. The restoration company you choose to handle the task can use chemical agents to deal with microbial growth. There are different categories of chemical agents that can be used for this purpose, each working differently. Our SERVPRO technicians study the qualities of different chemical agents, allowing us to make the right choice when the need arises. We use antimicrobial agents if the loss involves clean water, and the goal is to limit or stop microbial growth that leads to mold development. We use disinfectants such as Phenols, Quaternaries, or Alcohol when the idea is to destroy microorganisms, in case we establish that the water is contaminated.

A Fire Caused By a Faulty Cooking Appliance Left Me Dealing With Fire Damage in North Kingston. Where Do I Seek Help?

9/15/2020 (Permalink)

Fire damaged kitchen When we are done, the fire damage can seem, “Like it never even happened.”

Call SERVPRO Restorers in North Kingston to Help You With The Fire Damage Restoration Process

When a house fire occurs, homeowners are often left stranded about what to do. The soot and smoke residues spread extensively even to unaffected areas of your North Kingston home. If ignored for an extended period, the residues can begin to discolor surfaces, and odors may continue to become more potent.

Can smoke residues get into my HVAC system?
Fire damage in your North Kingston property can spread even to areas you cannot expect. During the fire incident, your HVAC system may collect and retain moisture, smoke, and gaseous emissions, among other contaminants. This can happen even when your HVAC system is not operating. It can affect the air quality of your property and the operations of the HVAC system.

At SERVPRO, we have certified indoor air professionals who have decades of experience and access to advanced duct cleaning systems equipped with the necessary tools to inspect your HVAC system. The duct-cleaning package includes a strong vacuum and an efficient filtering system. The vacuum pulls contaminants and soils into the filtering system that prevents residues and bacteria from being reintroduced into the indoor environment.

What damage can smoke residues cause?
Even after containing a small fire in your property, some surfaces can suffer staining and discoloration. If the situation is ignored for more than 48 hours, the ash and soot produced by the fire can discolor surfaces such as:

    •    Ceilings
    •    Vinyl
    •    Wood
    •    Walls

Besides, soot can also etch and corrode materials such as metal and glass. The corrosion can affect your home’s structural integrity. Hiring SERVPRO’s professional restorers within 48 hours can reduce the chances of permanent smoke damage occurring.

How can you remove the smoke odor?
Smoke lingers in confined surfaces like furniture, clothes, and upholstery. No matter the size of a fire in your property, the odor can be intense and last for an extended period. Without the right cleaning techniques and deodorization, the smell can infect your valuable items and the structure. That can make it difficult for you and your family to live in the property. If you intend to sell your property in the future, the odor can reduce its value.

Since the fire started in the kitchen, our professionals can use an enzyme digester, which works effectively on protein materials to eliminate the smell. The product breaks down protein molecules into simple, soluble substances that bacteria can absorb. We can also run air scrubbers to improve the air quality in your home.

To prevent additional destruction in your property after a fire, contact SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties at (401) 847-8145. When we are done, the fire damage can seem, “Like it never even happened.”

When Should I Remove Mold-Infested Building Materials From Your South Kingstown Home?

9/7/2020 (Permalink)

mold growing on ceiling If you discover mold in your property, it is essential to begin the remediation procedure as quickly as possible.

Mold Infestations May Require the Removal of Infested Building Materials Once Other Options are Exhausted. SERVPRO of South Kingstown Can Help to Assess and Remediate Mold Damage in your South Kingstown Property.

Is drywall ruined once mold appears?
For many South Kingstown residents, the appearance of microbes and their odors can cause wholesale replacement of building materials in the home. At SERVPRO, we know that wholesale replacement is not always necessary and should be reserved as a last resort. Typically, porous materials are at most risk of a mold infestation as hyphae can bond deep below the surface level. However, in some cases, molds may not penetrate the entirety of a porous material. It can be time-efficient to scrape the surface layers of mold away from the surface, followed by the application of anti-microbial chemicals for denser surfaces and lightly soiled drywalls. When materials so signs of heavy infestation, SERVPRO remediators can remove the affected area and install clean, replacement materials.

How do you restore indoor air-quality after a mold issue?
Homeowners with mold damage in their South Kingstown property may find the air thick or odorous due to the infestation. Removing colonies and infested building materials can mitigate further spores being released into the environment but may not be effective at restoring indoor air quality. Air scrubbers can help remove these particles from your indoor environment, while negative air-pressure machines can keep them from spreading to unaffected areas. Surfaces that are scraped to eliminate mold colonies can often be repainted using an odor and microbial sealing primer to provide a fresh, clean surface for further redecoration.

What causes mold growth in a property?
- Slow leaks or other damp spots that may occur in walls
- Poor insulation which can lead to condensation spots in cavities
- High levels of humidity alongside warm temperature

If you discover mold in your property, it is essential to begin the remediation procedure as quickly as possible. Contact SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties at (401) 847-8145.

Do External Factors Interfere with The Restoration of a Flooded Home?

8/25/2020 (Permalink)

heavy rain hitting roof; blurred trees in background Unfortunately, storms often cause flooding. Should your home flood, call SERVPRO for fast remediation.

SERVPRO's Years of Experience Restoring Flood Damage Within Newport Area Gives Us Unique Insights in Handling All Issues

When your home is inundated with filthy floodwaters, your focus is on removing the water, cleaning the affected areas, and restoring any damaged materials. Therefore, you might consider any action that seems to help you achieve these goals as beneficial. However, some external factors might change the trajectory you have planned for the restoration process. An experienced team of technicians from SERVPRO can help you understand or even anticipate some of the issues, thus running a smooth restoration exercise at your Newport home.

Which external factors can interfere with flood damage restoration at my Newport home?

You may expect the decision, whether it is to renovate the house or choose other extreme alternatives such as demolition, to be clear cut once you establish the extent of damages caused by the Newport flooding incident. Issues such as saturation of materials with moisture and soiling of surfaces are easy to address, especially with help from an experienced team like SERVPRO. However, an incident can also involve severe problems such as:

  • Cracked or collapsed walls due to hydrostatic pressure
  • Deep contamination of porous and semi-porous materials
  • Foundation or basement wall cracks

In case of such issues, renovating the property or the affected section is usually not feasible because of the expenses involved. In some cases, the problems are irresolvable. Sometimes the decision is influenced by external factors such as:

  • Conditions set by your insurer
  • Legal implications that demand the house to be torn down
  • The need for demolition and hazardous material disposal permits

Regardless of the outcome of a flooding incident, local regulations might require you to comply with requirements such as filling in the basement or raising the house to give it higher ground clearance. Our SERVPRO technicians provide such information before starting any restoration processes to choose an approach that complies with the regulations from the outset.

Why are demolition permits necessary?

Flooding incidents in Newark might necessitate complete or partial demolition of sections of the property. Since demolition involves tearing down various materials, it can release harmful substances such as asbestos or chemicals such as lead and mercury. Permits are issued to ensure only qualified people handle the dangerous materials, and that the proper disposal methods are used after removing the contents from your property.

With help from our SERVPRO technicians, getting the necessary permits is easier since we have the skills required for handling hazardous materials. We are also conversant with regulations governing disposal processes, including finding designated dumping sites for dangerous materials rather than sending them to regular landfills.

What conditions are insurers likely to set if my home floods?

  • Site protection
  • Salvaging materials to save cost

If you have an insurance cover that caters for flooding incidents, you do not have to worry much about the cost implications loss. However, your insurer may require you to adhere to specific regulations for faster processing of your claim. One essential thing insurance companies mandate is the protection of affected property to halt further deterioration. Deterioration can be caused by:

  • Rodents and other small animals
  • Weather elements such as rain
  • Acts of vandalism

Our SERVPRO technicians can help protect your damaged property by installing roof tarps and boarding up wall openings. We use sophisticated approaches to ensure sufficient protection. For instance, we use durable tarps when securing roof openings to provide adequate protection should the renovation process takes months to complete. When boarding up the walls, we use materials that create substantial barriers. For example, instead of merely attaching plywood boards on walls to seal openings, we can use the bolt-with-tension approach whereby we bolt the plywood to two-by-four planks so that it is held in place through tension. Since the plywood overlaps the exterior part of the wall, while the planks overlap the interior wall, the solution provides sufficient security without physical damage.

What materials can be salvaged after flooding?

Moisture accumulation, which is the main issue during flooding, affects a wide range of materials on the floors, siding, and other sections of the house. Most of the damage occurs on the floor, especially on porous floor covers such as carpets and pad, so there is heavy contamination and accumulating of significant moisture levels within their structure. On the other hand, wall materials such as the wooden frames, doors, and window trims and fittings such as cabinets might accrue fewer damages, and thus it is possible to save them.

SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties can help you deal with any flooding incident, "Like it never even happened." Call us any time at (401) 847-8145.

SERVPRO Helps Manage All Aspects of Water Damage Repair Including Managing Speed and Other Aspects of the Restoration

Stopping incidents that lead to water damage in Bristol properties from happening is the ideal situation for a property owner. However, that is not always possible, and when an incident happens, you may opt for a speedy response as the next best thing. However, you might have questions on the benefits you get, as well as the shortcomings you might expect, if any.

How can a fast response lead to more damages?

When performing the water damage restoration, your Bristol property requires fast action and has many advantages. However, some aspects of the remediation may require moderation because speed may do more harm than good. Some steps, such as drying wood, which swells when wet, or general moisture removal by manipulating air movements, might require you to slow down to avoid problems such as:

  • Wooden surfaces cracking
  • Warping of wooden structural supports
  • Condensation collecting on dry surfaces

Cracking or warping in wood happens because of stresses that develop when exposed surfaces dry faster and thus shrink, while the wetter interior surfaces remain the same. Our SERVPRO technicians use unique approaches to sustain faster drying while avoiding the negative aspects. For instance, we can set up drying chambers to help balance the humidity around the wooden materials during drying. We also do calculations to establish the right ratio of air movers and dehumidifiers to prevent condensation of the evaporated moisture.

What are the benefits of speedy restoration?

  • Preventing mold development
  • Halting moisture migration to hidden areas
  • Prevention of bad odor

Since the combined effects of all these aspects determine how bad the water damage turns out, preventing them from developing minimizes the inconveniences faced.

When not sure of the best approach to fix your water-damaged property, SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties can help. You can reach us at (401) 847-8145, any time. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster.

SERVPRO Is Vigilant When Managing Category 3 Water, Using Research-Based Best Practices to Keep You and Your Family Safe from Flood Damage in North Kingstown

The hurricane season features storm activity that batters the entire Eastern Seaboard, including our North Kingston community. High winds, torrential rains, and storm surge all contribute to the chaos and damage flooding inflicts on houses in the area. The chance of exposure to dangerous contaminants carried in by the floodwaters is understandably worrisome to residents. Whatever company you hire to remove the flooding must have a robust and proven response to the cleaning and disinfecting required after it contains and lawfully disposes of the fluids.

What Kind of Contamination Might Be in the Mix of Flooding Fluids in My Home?

When flood damage occurs in North Kingston, a broad range of potentially hazardous substances can mix into the watery mess filling the spaces in your home. Rainwater is by far the most common component which might seem “clean,” but as it falls, it picks up airborne pollutants. On the earth’s surface it continues to gather contaminants as it heads into your home:

    •    Dirt, sand, oils, grease, and paving materials picked up as the rainwater flows over roads, parking lots, and sidewalks
    •    Industrial waste as the flooding rolls over business sites
    •    Landscaping chemicals from your own and neighboring lawns
    •    Overflow from sanitary sewers
    •    Dead animals, insects, and garbage
    •    Storm surge

Do I Need to Worry About My Home’s Waste Backing Up During Flooding?

If the municipal rainwater drainage system is overwhelmed by torrents of precipitation, it stands to reason that the waste draining through your sewer line risks pressure-based backup in the absence of a backflow valve. When the SERVPRO crew arrives, we evaluate all safety considerations, never ignoring the perils posed by the Category 3 water collecting in the lower levels of your home. We immediately check for sewer line contamination. The blood and fecal-borne organisms suspended in the water can cause severe illness and even death if not managed promptly and according to lawful best practices.

Does a Local Company Have the Capacity to Handle Highly-Contaminated Water and the Knowledge to Discharge It Lawfully?

Our technicians and managers are trained and well-prepared through coursework from the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) to contain and dispose of tainted flood waters appropriately. Do not fear if others in your neighborhood face the same type of crisis as our resources are vast and scalable. Our ties to the community are intrinsic as we live and choose our base of operations here. Still, we also have access to a nationwide network of IICRC-trained and commercial-grade-equipped flood disaster professionals if required.

What Are the Phases of Flood Damage Mitigation and Remediation?

Assessment
An inspection of the extent of the damage and the nature of the contaminants and other hazards.

Planning
Using IICRC training and our managers’ considerable on-the-job experience, we plan out the interventions needed to bring your home back to “Like it never even happened.”

Implementation

Debris Removal
Using shovels and rakes, workers remove the solids swept into your home. This decreases the chance of clogging our equipment.

Hidden Water and Moisture Detection and Measurement
By employing devices that sense and meter moisture amounts, we locate flood water in building cavities. If needed, we take steps to use limited demolition techniques to release the water -- drilled or sawn holes or flood cuts in walls parallel to the floor and several inches above the flood line.

Water Removal
Submersible pumps positioned in the deepest places of the flooded area evacuate the bulk of the water. Truck-mounted extractors take out the residual standing water, capable of pulling off 36,000 gallons a day per machine. Pumps and truck-mounts operate on gas or generators, capable of extraction even if your electricity is temporarily disconnected. Portable backpack extractors can reach confined areas.

Water Containment and Disposal
Pumps drain into treated sewer lines, and our truck-mounted tanks can hold more than 100 gallons. Management keeps current with local regulations and arranges for the necessary paperwork and lawful disposal.

Cleaning and Disinfection
Our crews clean all affected surfaces with EPA-registered products and apply EPA-registered antimicrobials to inhibit the chance of pathogen regrowth.

Structural Drying
Data from the moisture testing plus measurements in unaffected areas in your home help us create drying goals. We then use air movers, heaters, and dehumidifiers to evaporate, capture, and contain for disposal the trapped moisture.

Hire the experts at SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties with confidence when flood damage creates messy and potentially hazardous conditions in your North Kingstown home. We answer inquiries at (401) 847-8145 day and night, 365 days of the year.

How Can I Get Smoke Damage Off My Walls and Ceilings After a Kitchen Fire?

7/20/2020 (Permalink)

smoke surrounding smoke detector Kitchen fires are particularly hard to remediate. SERVPRO has the know-how to restore your kitchen.

SERVPRO Techs Have Specialized Training in the Removal of all Types of Fire Loss from Your North Kingston Home

It does not matter if the fire in your kitchen was large or small; either type can leave large amounts of damage to clean up. One of the most frustrating is the layer of soot that gets left behind on surfaces. Post-fire cleanup efforts from a professional restoration services company should begin as rapidly as possible and let them handle the cleanup of walls and ceilings. When soot covers chrome furnishings, it is caustic and can ruin anything it lands on if it remains too long. When incorrect cleaning methods get used, it can:

  • Drive odorous soot more deeply into surfaces
  • Cause stains
  • Destroy finishes on furnishings that had restoration potential

How Does a Dry Cleaning Sponge Work for Fire Damage Cleanup?

One of the many tools that SERVPRO techs bring to your North Kingston home for fire damage restoration services is dry cleaning sponges. When high heat fires burn organic materials, they leave deposits of light, powdery residues. If liquids get applied, it compounds the issues and drives the residues into the surface and worsens the problem. The techs use the dry cleaning sponges to pick up the soot and lift it away from the surfaces. They turn the sponge with each pass and then dispose of it along with the residues. In this way, painted walls can get restored and not need removal, thus saving the homeowner the cost of replacement and time for rebuilding. In cases where the sheetrock stays in place, but the particulate has gotten driven too deeply into the wall or ceiling, the techs can apply a sealant for a fresh start that only needs priming and painting.

Fire damage needs fast action to lessen the loss and get your home back to normal as fast as possible. Contact SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties at (401) 847-8145, and the certified techs are available 24/7 to handle any fire loss to your home.

Can Flooring Impacted by a Severe Water Leak be Saved?

6/25/2020 (Permalink)

water damaged room; flooring stripped to subfloor; baseboards removed Water damages flooring materials. SERVPRO knows how to make it, "Like it never even happened."

It is Possible to Save Flooring in Your North Kingston Home That Has Been Affected by Big Water Leaks

Whenever a pipe in your North Kingston home ruptures, your floors are often suddenly covered in inches or even feet of water, and water can quickly inundate your carpeting, wooden floors, tilework, and subfloors. Experts estimate that this catastrophic issue could result in more than 160 gallons of water per hour leaking into your residence. In a matter of hours, this could rapidly produce thousands of gallons of standing water in your home. Luckily, trained professionals can quickly remediate clean water damage if you call them soon enough. Water cleanup services like SERVPRO can help and save most kinds of floors.

How Does Water Damage My Carpets, Wooden and Hard Floors, and Subfloors?

SERVPRO, a North Kingston water cleanup company, has encountered various types of water damage affecting flooring. Our experience with water damage has ranged from relatively minor in effect to quite severe. Of course, each flooring material handles water exposure differently, and some react to it better than others. Some of the forms of water-related damage that affect carpeting are:

  • Bubbling from water washing away the adhesive that binds it to the subfloor
  • Delamination, or when the primary and secondary backing layers of carpeting separate
  • Latex deterioration that leads to the loss of carpet fibers and reduces carpeting’s overall integrity

Although these effects can force you to replace this floor covering, you can usually avoid experiencing them if you address your standing water issue quickly.

Water’s impact on wooden flooring often depends on the construction, but the damage is usually more severe and costly. Moreover, it does not take long for these effects to result. A few examples of wood floor impairments due to water exposure are:

  • Water stains or discoloration
  • Swelling and warping, or deformation, of the wood
  • Buckling that tents, or forces upward, floor sections at joints where they meet and at the walls
  • Delamination of particleboard or oriented strand board (OSB) layers
  • Dry rot resulting from fungal growths

If water ever covers your wood flooring, remember that the faster cleaning occurs, the less damage it usually does. The longer the liquid remains on floors, the more their wooden surfaces absorb. The water causes the wood segments of your flooring to change shape and eventually buckle against each other—also, ground coverings comprising weaker wood products like particleboard and OSB. Glued-together layers, which are more likely to delaminate, the more prolonged exposure to water occurs, compose these boards.

Hard flooring, like concrete, asphalt or vinyl tiles, and ceramic tiles, is much more resilient to water damage in North Kingston than carpet or wood floors. Often, it is also much simpler and less expensive to remediate. With that said, however, these ground coverings are harmed by water in the following ways:

  • Blistering or flaking of painted concrete surfaces
  • Mineral deposits from evaporated water in concrete
  • Mold growth fostered by dirty, wet surfaces
  • Separation of vinyl and ceramic tiles from the floor
  • Warping and expansion of subflooring

Concrete and asphalt tile floors are least at risk of substantial water damage. Concrete floors mostly suffer minor surface cosmetic issues like paint flaking and calcium deposits. Often, water can only remove the finish from asphalt tiles. Since the adhesive of vinyl tiles dissolves relatively quickly, the tiles themselves are prone to separating from flooring if submerged for a sufficient period. Water can penetrate the grouting between ceramic tiles, causing the subflooring to swell and warp and break away from the floor.

What Can SERVPRO Do to Save Your Flooring?

When dealing with water-damaged flooring, SERVPRO employs various advanced tools and methods. Once our technicians extract all standing water with truck-mounted/portable extractors or wet vacs, they get to work on remediating your floors. Some of the tools and techniques they use to do the latter are:

  • Wands using hot water extraction and shampoo to clean and extract excess water from glued-down carpets
  • Heavier extraction devices to squeeze excess water out of thicker carpeting and padding
  • Moisture meters that identify and measure moisture levels in affected flooring and subflooring
  • Injectidry panel drying systems that dry out subflooring

SERVPRO Technicians are Trained to Provide Effective Water Removal for North Kingstown Homes

North Kingstown homeowners might think they have avoided disaster after removing water from a toilet overflow or pipe leak. Still, surface damage may serve as an indication of what hides beneath flooring or behind walls. These damages can create a thriving environment for mold and more costly repairs down the line.

If your North Kingstown home requires water removal after a toilet overflow or similar disaster, certified SERVPRO technicians are available 24/7 to mitigate the damage while saving you time and money.

What Qualifies SERVPRO Technicians for Water Removal?

SERVPRO tools and techniques take a systematic and scientific approach to water damage mitigation.

  • Moisture measurement tools like sensors, meters, and infrared imaging are used to evaluate surfaces before, during, and after drying to ensure that items return to appropriate moisture levels.
  • Extraction tools like wands and sump pumps are as much as 500 times more effective at eliminating water than drying alone.
  • Drying equipment consists of centrifugal air movers that work in tandem with industrial-grade dehumidifiers to eliminate moisture from surfaces after extraction.
  • EPA-registered antimicrobials are effective for both sanitation and odor control.

How Do SERVPRO Technicians Restore a Water-Damaged Bathroom?

In a clean water situation, SERVPRO technicians can work quickly to extract water from your bathroom floor, baseboards, drywall, and nearby carpeting. Techs can also evaluate wall studs and subfloors for signs of saturation with infrared cameras.

If there is water damage in your walls, the baseboards may need to be removed for more effective drying of wall cavities. Insulation on exterior walls can be sucked up with a specialized vacuum and dried separately.

My Walls are Wet After a Flood in North Kingston, What Do I Do?

6/11/2020 (Permalink)

flooding in home For assistance after a flood, contact SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties at (401) 847-8145.

SERVPRO Uses Specialized Techniques to Restore Your Walls in North Kingston

Our technicians understand how enduring a flood in your North Kingston home can be a traumatic experience. Having your walls or ceiling absorb water may be shocking, but with professional assistance, restoration is possible. Depending on how the floodwater damages your home, our technicians perform procedures such as flood cuts to mitigate further damages.

Does SERVPRO Rip Out the Entire Wall? No, Our Technicians Perform Flood Cuts

When flood damage impacts the walls in your North Kingston home, our technicians remove the bottom portion, extending several inches above the actual damage to ensure moisture does not spread. Ideally, cuts are at the 24 or 48 inches, so drywall panels are easily replaced. Technicians remove the drywall and insulation behind it. As part of the complete drying and restoration process, technicians replace the drywall panels after completing the work.

What are the Benefits of Performing Flood Cuts?

    •    Removing impacted drywall stops the spread of any bacteria found in category three (black) floodwaters.
    •    Allows technicians to remove damaged materials, including drywall and insulation.
    •    Flood cuts give restoration specialists access to the area behind the wall.
    •    It provides access to dry inside the wall cavities with high-velocity air movers.

What Would Happen to My Walls if We Did Not Perform Flood Cuts?

    •    Long-term exposure to moisture can cause wearing of building materials impacting the structural integrity.
    •    The moisture could spread throughout the wall, which could foster mold growth.
    •    Unpleasant odors may develop if moisture in and behind the walls is not removed.

Flood cuts may seem like an extreme measure. However, they may save a good portion of your wall if performed quickly enough. In addition to flood cuts, technicians address other areas of your home impacted by the floodwater.

For assistance after a flood, contact SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties at (401) 847-8145. We make it, “Like it never even happened.”

How Do Thermal Foggers Help Smoke-Damaged North Kingston Homes?

5/26/2020 (Permalink)

fire and smoke filled home. SERVPRO can handle all the fire and smoke damage done to your North Kingston home. Don't hesitate to call for the help you deserve.

We use many deodorizing tools like thermal foggers to neutralize foul scents after fire losses.

There are many deodorizing tools that we can use to help control the severe loss effects of a fire in North Kingston homes. After structure fires, smoke odors can move quickly throughout the residence, requiring a deliberate response and deployment of efficient tools to neutralize this threat before odors become overwhelming.

With so many levels of fire damage in North Kingston properties, decisions must get continuously made regarding the best equipment and products for restoration and recovery.

Why Choose Thermal Foggers Over Other Deodorizing Tools?

While there are many deodorizers in our arsenal, including ozone and hydroxyl generators, there are many instances where thermal and ULV foggers are wiser decisions. While both of the generators can affect a larger damaged area, and technologies like these get used in the SERVPRO warehouse for off-site recovery, foggers win out because they:

  • Are lightweight and mobile
  • Are fast-acting
  • Produce vapor to penetrate porous materials

Fire losses can be devastating for area houses, especially when symptoms like lingering odors do not get addressed quickly. Give our SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties team a call to help however you need at(401) 847-8145.

Bring in SERVPRO for Professional Restoration in Your North Kingston Residence

Water intrusions like cracked pipes or failed appliances are far more common in North Kingston homes than flooding from a storm. Our restoration teams train extensively to return each one to its original, pre-water spill condition.

How Quickly Can SERVPRO Get This Done?

Removal is the first step when it comes to North Kingston water restoration. SERVPRO technicians have a large inventory of pumps and extractors to pull water out of carpets and wood flooring to restore them to full usefulness in about a week normally.

With the Water Gone, how do your Teams Restore the Rest of My Property?

The key now, is drying both the structure and the property inside your home. To do it quickly and without causing further damage, technicians use three devices: air movers, dehumidifiers, and fans.

  • Air movers use a warm, dry flow of air to push moisture out of property like drywall and wood furniture and into the air.
  • Dehumidifiers draw moisture from the air and more from nearby property items.
  • Fans pull the already damp air out of the home and push it outside, which allows the air movers and dehumidifiers to work more efficiently.

Does Water Damage Disappear Naturally From my North Kingston Home?

5/22/2020 (Permalink)

water causing damage An untreated water issue can lead to high restoration costs in the future, contact SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties.

Unchecked Water Issues in the North Kingston Home are More Likely to Get Worse than Better

What prevents water from evaporating naturally in a home environment?

Without the conditions for evaporation, existing water damage in your North Kingston home can stagnate, damage material construction, and cause unpleasant odors. In some cases, water may be leaking faster than it is evaporating. In extreme situations, this can lead to flooding, but for many homeowners, it results in persistent minor water issues that can be difficult to diagnose.

What are the tell-tale signs of a water issue in my home?

    •    Unpleasant odors in some areas of the house.
    •    Discoloration of paintwork which is generally at the lower and upper joints
    •    Visible signs of moisture, damp spots or condensation on walls during warmer weather
    •    Bubbling effects on ceilings below wet rooms or warping floors beneath your feet
    •    High humidity levels that are inconsistent with other rooms in the property

What should I do if I suspect water leaks in my property?

If you notice any symptoms that could be the result of a water issue, it is vital that you intervene quickly to prevent long-term harm. Our technicians can trace the symptoms of water problems back to its source using our knowledge of water migration as well as professional equipment like moisture sensors, meters, and probes. By tracing water back to the source, we can address the cause before implementing an effective drying procedure.

How to dry out enclosed spaces in the home?

In cavities of the home, evaporated moisture has nowhere to go, which can result in condensation on outer walls leading to damp spots. Our technicians can set up a closed-drying system to create artificial ventilation and warmth to dry the area. For cavities, we can access the wall using injectidry nozzles to circulate warm, dry air into wall cavities without needing to remove building materials.

An untreated water issue can lead to high restoration costs in the future, contact SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties at (401) 847-8145 to stop them at the source.

in the middle of remodel Having water issues in your Newport business? Call SERVPRO to mitigate your problem.

We have reliable units and pumps that can work continually to remove several feet of standing water after substantial loss incidents.

Warehouse water losses can be a considerable challenge for restoration teams primarily because of the large open floor layouts in these Newport commercial properties. When water losses are severe enough, the warehouse floor can contend with several inches or even feet of standing water.

It is critical that water removal in Newport warehouses begins immediately, and that our team or competent individuals stop the flow of new water into the affected areas of the facility. The longer that you wait for extraction, drying, and recovery efforts, the more damage that can happen to the stored inventory and stock in the building.

What Happens to Stored Items?

Though you might have many of the items in your warehouse up on pallets, it rarely takes long to reach the 6 inches of clearance to damage stored stock with a severe loss. Content management can come in three potential ways:

  • On-site relocation
  • On-site drying and surface cleaning
  • Off-site restoration and recovery

Residential fires in North Kingston homes are often limited to the room where it originated; normally the kitchen. In some homes, however, the fire burns and moves very quickly through the structure, causing damage to everything from the cellar to the roof.

How bad can it get?

There can be fire damage to your North Kingston home.Scorching and worse to drywall and framing, along with destroying carpets, flooring, and more. Our personnel train extensively to demolish ruined material and remove it without further damage to your home. Experienced builders and other specialists can then repair, replace, or restore all of this in your residence.

Contact SERVPRO to Perform Commercial Water Damage Restoration in Your North Kingston Office

Water damage in an office building can prevent you from doing business and put the safety and health of your employees at risk. When you notice signs of commercial water damage, you need to take action right away.

What can affect the restoration process?

Restoring a commercial property is usually more complicated than residential restoration. We can deal with commercial water damage in your North Kingston office by taking several steps. Some factors that affect the restoration process include:

  • The structure and size of the commercial building
  • Varying use of space
  • The severity of the damage
  • Number of people in the building

Apart from the above factors, there is a time constraint for completing the job since business activities should continue as soon as possible. We certify our team of experts through the (IICRC) Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification.

What can I do to prevent further damage?

You can prevent further water damage to your office by locating the source of the leak and stopping it. Before beginning any work, make sure you wear the right clothes and protective gear. Also, make sure the power to the affected area is out. You can use a shop vac to remove the water.

How do you dry a property?

Inadequate drying can lead to expensive repairs. Our team understands building and material science well. Therefore, we do not just place drying equipment in property but rather establish a drying plan based on the challenges and needs of a project. Since we understand buildings construction, we inspect for moisture effectively, identify materials and assemblies, and create a detailed demo and drying plan. Some of the drying and moisture detection equipment we use includes:

  • Axial air movers – They move large volumes of air in the affected area to increase the evaporation rate. The equipment can dry even the hard to reach areas, including wall cavities.
  • Desiccant dehumidifiers – They remove moisture from the air. Desiccant dehumidifiers use chemicals that absorb water readily, and they produce the driest air.
  • Moisture meters – we use them to measure the moisture content in various materials.

Call SERVPRO technicians immediately you spot the source of the leak to minimize chances of severe damage to office equipment, furniture, and building materials. We have decades of experience and use cutting-edge restoration techniques to restore water-damaged offices.

How Can SERVPRO Remove Stains From Burnt Cosmetics?

Unfortunately, a fire in your Newport bathroom can sometimes lead to the destruction of cosmetic products. Whether your favorite foundation has burned on the surface of your sink, or a container of soap has melted into a sticky mess, we have a way to help you. Our technicians can begin remediation by removing charred debris from your bathroom and then moving onto the soot stains. Our techs can remove soot stains with devices such as:

  • Scrubbing pads
  • Lubricative cleaning agents
  • Chemical cleaning agents

Removing soot can be a complicated process. However, our fire damage restoration technicians are certified by the Institution of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration (IICRC.) Our SERVPRO techs can investigate the cause of the soot and then apply that knowledge to breaking it down with specific cleaning products. Soot stains can vary depending on the burned material, so not all cleaners work the same. Working with professionals can help ensure your home might be able to return to its preloss state.

What About the Smell? How Can SERVPRO Help With That?

Fires that burn through cosmetic products, and other packaging, can leave behind a putrid odor. The smell of burning plastics and chemicals is never pleasant. For this reason, SERVPRO can help reduce odors by using devices such as:

  • Air Scrubbers with Carbon Filters
  • Thermal Foggers
  • Sealant Paints

Sealing and removing odors can help you continue to live in your house, "Like it never even happened." Air scrubbers and thermal foggers both eliminate malodors on a particle-level. Air scrubbers pull particles from the air and entrap them. Thermal foggers dispense a vapor as a fog, which can also entrap and neutralize the odors. Should a smell be particularly persistent, sealing paints can help our technicians seal away the particles causing the unpleasant odors.

It is always the goal of our technicians to thoroughly clean and remediate your home so you can go back to living your life. Furthermore, we're here with you every step of the way through the remediation. If you have questions, concerns, or comments, our technicians are willing to listen and answer, so you know what is happening inside of your home at all times.

Does Seawater Make Flood Damage Worse?

"Need help?" SERVPRO Leaves Your Flood Damaged Home in North Kingston Only When It Is Dry and Ready for a Build Back.

SERVPRO Provides Expert Flood Recovery When Saltwater Damages North Kingston Homes

Weather patterns and rising sea levels contribute to a problem unique to coastal areas. Flash flooding during storms is complicated by significant amounts of saltwater entering and overwhelming residential properties.

How Can Seawater Flood Your Home?

Flood damage in North Kingston can include significant seawater involvement. Duck and Bissel Coves bring saltwater far inside the borders of our oceanside town. Rain and wind storms produce strong surges of ocean water, while king tides cause flooding of shoreland.

Why Does Saltwater Flooding Do More Damage?

Rainwater is already destructive, reacting with materials to break them down ruined for future use. Flooding already necessitates rapid extraction and drying to halt progressive destruction and secondary issues like mold. High levels of salt in seawater lead to:

  • The water becoming more conductive of heat and electrical charges, increasing the risk of electrocution
  • Swifter corrosion and rusting of metals
  • The accelerated weakening of building materials
  • Erosion around foundations makes soil less stable as its chemical composition changes, breaking down common foundation materials over time
  • Faster mold growth because of organic substances

Why Does Saltwater Damage Recovery Differ from Normal Flood Restoration?

Merely removing water and drying out the structure of your home does not account for the deposits of salt that can remain throughout your home. Systems and materials damaged by the salt include:

HVAC ducting

The metal can corrode and distort, and fasteners loosen.

Wiring

Copper and aluminum can corrode, risking shorts that can damage electronics and cause fires.

Plumbing

Metal pipes can rust, increasing the chance for leaks and water damage.

Wood and wood products

Delignification can occur when saltwater soaks into wood, pulling out the “lignin,” an organic substance that makes cell walls rigid. Severe weakening of structures follows.

How Do We Reduce the Salt?

SERVPRO uses fresh water to wash away the salt. Freshwater flushes through the affected space, and we pump and extract the steadily desalinating fluids. Throughout the process, we monitor salt levels until nearly normal readings occur.

SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties stands ready to handle complex seawater flooding scenarios. Call (401) 847-8145 to discuss the protocols and your options.

When Water, Fire, Mold, or Just a Good Cleaning Is Needed in Your North Kingston Home

For more than 15 years, our SERVPRO team has worked to provide restoration services that fully embodied the needs of North Kingston home and business owners. We have grown to become a one-stop-shop for recovery after disasters, but also for more specific threats to your property like air quality concerns in your HVAC system, biohazardous conditions in a structure, or a need for build back after a considerable loss incident. Not only have we found successes in building our report with hundreds of homes and businesses over the years, but we have managed to help those hit by devastating natural disasters elsewhere in the country as well.

Fire

North Kingston fires can be devastating for your home, and the restoration services that our SERVPRO team provides seeks to address every need of structure after a blaze. Once first responders have left the scene and turned the property back over to the customer, we can immediately begin working with you and your insurance company to get the approvals in place to start mitigation services as quickly as possible. The sooner that these steps can get started, the less devastating property loss becomes.

Mitigation is one of the most vital steps for a customer’s property, and one that features many different tasks happening simultaneously. When our professionals reach a fire-damaged North Kingston home, we can start by clearing out the debris. Beginning where the fire started, we can manage the densest concentrations of ash, debris, material remnants, and more. After the debris gets removed, we can turn our attention to other cleaning needs exposed surfaces might have.

Likewise, the contents of your North Kingston home must also get attention to reduce the total loss that the customer experiences. While we offer pack-out services that can allow for more intricate cleaning and deodorization off-site, it can often be most cost-effective to restore belongings at the job site and securely store them in undamaged areas of the property until full restoration and recovery complete. If soot cleaning and widespread deodorization are necessary, our warehouse features immersion cleaning techniques, and an ozone chamber to neutralize smoke smells in numerous items at once.

Storm

Here in Rhode Island, we have seen some of the best and worst weather conditions that nature has to offer. When severe storms occur, such as hurricanes breaching the coastlines, we know how important it is to respond quickly to crippled North Kingston homes. We have a comprehensive approach to restoration after storm and flood losses, offering both mitigation for water damage and efficient solutions for temporary board up and tarping.

We are a Large Loss provider for the area, meaning that we have a pool of resources and personnel to ensure that we can handle the full measure of restoration demands after devastating storm losses. Our team is experienced in helping homes and businesses get back on their feet, and that has extended to our traveling emergency responders who have managed to help out in other areas of the country after hurricanes and natural disasters threatened thousands. We even have efficient solutions for flooding in North Kingston homes.

Flooding can happen in different ways, but how the threat gets resolved involves the skilled SERVPRO professionals dispatched to your North Kingston home. With powerful extractors like our electric sump pump and gas-powered trash pump, we can reduce standing water and prepare the property for focused drying with a combination of heaters, air movers, dehumidifiers, and other specialty drying tools.

Mold

There is no mistaking the severity of mold conditions that could exist at any time in a North Kingston home. Under the right moist environmental factors, spores can set into organic materials and colonize in as little as 48 hours. With such a finite timeline from the onset of damp conditions, it is vital to manage moisture with drying techniques and inhibit the growth of microbes using antimicrobial products and biocides.

Remediation can help remove the colonies from your North Kingston home, and this can happen in several ways. Often damaged surfaces can become too severely eroded and deteriorated by the growth and expansion of mold colonies to be salvageable. In this situation, our licensed general contractors can remove these damaged construction materials and replace them at a later point when drying and microbial management have completed.

Cleaning a surface affected by mold is also possible, but usually requires sophisticated abrasive cleaning techniques like soda and media blasting. These practices can not only protect the hosting material from further mold deterioration but can reduce the severity of musty odors the former colony emitted. For more direct deodorization, however, we can utilize tools like our thermal fogger or ozone machine in North Kingston properties.

When a controlled demolition is needed to remove non-salvageable materials, SERVPRO technicians can erect containment barriers to inhibit cross-contamination. Polyethelene sheets, using tape and tension poles, can effectively isolate work areas from unaffected rooms of the structure.

Water

Water damaging events are the most common callouts that our technicians receive every week, and as such, has become a disaster, or at least an inconvenience, that we consistently stay ready to address. From stocked production trailers and work vehicles at our warehouse to the ongoing training of our technicians, we have experience and education in the recovery of water losses for North Kingston homes and businesses.

For severe water loss incidents, we rely on an array of extraction tools to prepare North Kingston houses for the drying efforts necessary. For clean water scenarios, we can often trust in our electric submersible pump to reduce standing water to less than two inches. Light wands and wet vacuums can resolve the issue from that point, and clear pooling surface water before our drying tools take over.

Monitoring is a large part of the efficient recovery we offer our North Kingston customers after a water loss incident. With thermal imagery and surface moisture meters, we can determine the success of air movers and dehumidifiers positioned throughout the residence. Each of these readings can help to guide our SERVPRO technicians to a new positioning for the equipment to continue maximally removing moisture and making water losses “Like it never even happened.”

As a reputable restoration team, you can count on our team to be there when you need us. Give our SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties emergency response unit a call anytime disaster strikes at (401) 847-8145.

SERVPRO Saves Furniture From Fire Damage in Newport

One of the most deceptively difficult types of fire damage to cleanup happens in the kitchens of homes across the United States. When a protein combusts, the fats become airborne and coat surfaces in the vicinity.

A homeowner in Newport needed help with fire damage cleanup to his kitchen. A pan caught on fire and rather than cover it; someone in the home mistakenly used water to extinguish the fire. When water contacts hot oil, it immediately expands and transforms into a vapor, making the flames spread and more significant loss.

Containment and Air Quality Improvement

The techs set up containment around the kitchen doorway and vents to ensure no further cross-contamination occurred in the home from soot. Air scrubbers run continuously during mitigation to capture airborne particulate.

Removal of Charred Items

SERVPRO technicians found that the cabinets over the stove, sheetrock, and stove required disposal as they were too charred for restoration. Because unhealthy soot particles exist smaller than the eye can see and easily contaminate foodstuffs, much of the food in the pantry got removed as part of the cleanup.

Restoration of Furniture

The homeowner assumed his dining set was a loss due to the coverage of soot on the chairs and table in the vicinity of the fire.
Although the set was not of great monetary value, it had significant sentimental value. Upon inspection of the furnishings, SERVPRO techs stated the probability for the restoration of the pieces was high.
The techs wiped away the debris and residues on the chairs and table using specially formulated detergent cleaning agents and sponges. A final buffing removed all signs of the smoke damage.

Final Odor Control Measures

Once the charred items got disposed of and the remaining surfaces cleaned of all the residues, the kitchen smelled much better but still retained residual smoke odors. SERVPRO techs set up hydroxyl generators to neutralize any remaining odors safely in the home.

SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties at (401) 847-8145 uses the latest technology and advanced cleaning methods to restore properties with fire damage and make it "Like it never even happened."

Flood Damage in Newport

flooding in home SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties can ensure that your residence looks, “Like it never even happened.”

Mitigating Kitchen Flood Damage in Newport

Did you know that 90% of all natural disasters formally declared by the President of the United States involve flooding? This is no coincidence: flooding causes massive amounts of damage to numerous homes and structures and can do so in very little time. After just a week of exposure to water, wood and drywall can start to break down, and microbes have had time to proliferate, which can make it much more difficult to salvage a structure.

If your Newport residence needs flood damage mitigation that can act quickly, SERVPRO technicians are prepared to provide you with the services required to restore your home. These professionals utilize IICRC standards to maintain a consistently high standard of cleanup and mitigation that preserves homes across the region. Better still, your local SERVPRO is staffed by residents from the area who are in tune with the needs of the community.

Tips for Filing Your Flood Claim
    •    Get a certified copy of your flood policy. It is essential to both verify that you have coverage through the NFIP or other providers, as well as find out what precisely the coverage entails. Make this request as soon as possible.
    •    Get a damage estimate. Multiple estimates may be ideal before you submit your claim, so you know exactly how much you can get to cover costs realistically. Do not commence with repairs or disposal yet.
    •    Fill out a Proof of Loss. This form is a sworn statement containing your request for compensation, as well as a log of the damages incurred by the flooding. Send this within 60 days of the flooding.
    •    Contact an adjuster. Whether you use one provided by your insurer or an independent claims adjuster, these professionals can assist you with the claims process and submitting your Proof of Loss.

How SERVPRO Extracts Floodwaters from Your Home
Having the right extraction materials is essential to removing flooding. Many of SERVPRO's extraction tools feature three systems: vacuuming, heating, and pumping. If power was lost in your structure and a significant amount of water is still present, technicians can utilize gas-powered submersible pumps for water 2 inches in depth or more, or truck-mounted pumps for even more extensive water removal.

SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties can ensure that your residence looks, “Like it never even happened.” If disaster has struck in your home, call (401) 847-8145 to have a team there within hours.

Application of Enzymes in Protein Fire Damage affecting your Bristol Home

2/18/2020 (Permalink)

Kitchen fire Let us help you get your Kingston kitchen back in order after a fire incident.

Fire Damage in Kingston Kitchen Calls For Professional Restoration Services

Fire Damage Kingston

Leaving the stove unattended is responsible for over fifty percent of house fires in the US. When cooking with fatty foods like meat products, it is essential to keep an eye on the cooking throughout. Grease from animal fats can ignite rapidly and, because they are oil-based, throwing water at the problem can make things worse. While most cooking fires are brought under control relatively quickly, the area around the kitchen, as well as sometimes in adjacent rooms, can become thick with greasy, odorous soot deposits.

You may find that restoring grease fire damage in your Kingston kitchen is more of a challenge than dry fires. Water and oil repel each other, which means approaching a protein fire in the same way you would approach living room fire can lead to spreading wet-soots around. SERVPRO technicians can gather valuable intel on the types of equipment and cleaners we may need to restore your home by speaking to you directly or by pre-testing soot deposits, testing pH levels, and distinguishing between wet or dry smoke.

A challenge facing restorers of a protein fire is that many of the grease stains are insoluble in water. Equally, using powerful solvents in a cooking area may have adverse effects on certain materials, finishes, or odors. To combat this, SERVPRO restorers can use natural organic compounds to break down proteins and make them water-soluble. Enzymes are a living organism that can digest soils and make them easier to wash away without leaving behind odors or risk causing acidic damage to surfaces.

Since enzymes are living microbes, there must be certain practices put in place to use them effectively. There is a careful balancing act to using enzymes correctly, which involves maintaining average temperature, neutral acidity, and moisture, which allows them to thrive. SERVPRO can achieve this by bringing in portable heaters and repeated dampening the surface. Neutralizing surfaces with acid or alkaline levels can be achieved by applying solutions relative to the needed balance. Overall, enzyme cleaning can be ultra-effective with a short dwell time of just fifteen minutes to one hour.

Protein damages are exceptionally tough to clear away without the right intel and products. Contact SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties at (401) 847-8145.

The urgency of the circumstances and our track record in the community mean that contacting our team is the way to guarantee the application of the restoration industry’s best practices to your crisis.

Fast Response with Research-Based Protocols

Prompt addressing of the water damage is one of the most accurate predictors of a successful outcome. Speed is essential because water is an extremely destructive force, rapidly weakening and crumbling conventional building materials like drywall, insulation, and wood, particularly particleboard and laminates. SERVPRO equips its workers with powerful extractors to suction the water off of surfaces, and even out of multi-layered structures like hardwood floors. We rely not on a visual assessment of our water removal success, but of a scientifically grounded approach that uses moisture detection and measurement devices to provide data. We use initial testing results and regular monitoring to set appropriate drying goals and prove we are achieving the goals.

Count on professionalism, compassion, and focus when the team from SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties arrives to manage your water damage scenario. Contact us at (401) 847-8145 at any time of the day or night.

Salvageable Flooded Hardwood Floors in North Kingston Homes

1/31/2020 (Permalink)

Water spots on wood flooring. Having a flood in your North Kingston home can take over let us help with everything including your hardwood flooring.

Flood damage to your North Kingston flooring can be frustrating.

The determination of what materials are salvageable and which must get removed are some of the hundreds of drying and recovery decisions necessary for North Kingston homes after a flood. In situations where contaminations reaching categories 2 and 3 exist, it is customary to remove many of the exposed materials. This approach is unnecessary for category 1 (clean water) concerns. These situations exist from wind-driven rain coming in from missing windows or runoff pouring in through a compromised section of the roof.

Older homes in our area often feature hardwood flooring, which can be a focal point for our SERVPRO restorers when addressing flood damage in North Kingston properties. Removing the surface water from this material is rarely the extent of the attention wood flooring needs, but implementing effective drying practices quickly can prevent the need for controlled demolition and replacement.

Determining the salvageability of any material in your home involves the application of sophisticated detection devices and cameras. While surface meters can often determine the presence of water beyond the top layer of wood plank, advanced approaches like thermography can help to show cold spots where moisture exists. These readings and results can dictate where drying implements like mats get placed to remove the surface and free water trapped in the plank.

Because hardwoods like oak plank flooring have a lower porosity than other flooring types, there is a more considerable period of salvageability. If this flooring is among the only areas that require drying after flood damages, we can regulate airflow and the steady draw of moisture from the material by tenting in the drying mats and exhausting the moist air to the exterior of the house.

Flooding can impact many of the materials and contents of your home in a destructive way. The faster that you can secure the experienced professionals of our SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties team, the more of the saturated structural elements that we can protect. We can begin our assessment and respond to your emergency within hours of your initial call. You can reach us 24/7 at (401) 847-8145.

soot soiled wall and ceiling and a wiped down clean area SERVPRO Says--Call Us for Fire Damage Cleanup and Restoration in Kingston

North Kingston Fire Damage Residue Cleanup Basics

After a fire in your North Kingston home, it can be hard to imagine that any efforts can bring the scorched and soot-covered surfaces surrounding you back to preloss condition. The fire insurance industry has confidence that our well-trained and equipped restoration professionals can minimize disruption to you and your family while also saving time and money through efficient and effective cleaning of fire residues. We master the principles and elements of cleaning through the comprehensive Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) courses.

Cleaning Principles

Our goal is to transform the fire damage in your North Kingston home back to the appearance, function, and comfort you enjoyed before the blaze. Fire residues vary, even within the same dwelling, depending on the materials burned, the temperature and oxygen levels during the fire, the air movement, and the surfaces affected. We hit the marks by applying the following principles to your unique circumstances:

  • Discovery and identification of fire residues through a full-home inspection
  • Evaluation of the characteristics and durability of the soiled surfaces through pre-testing
  • Capture, removal, and disposal of residues through careful matching of techniques and products to the data gathered above

Cleaning Elements

The ultimate purpose of fire cleanup is to dislodge and suspend the residues deposited on surfaces. Once the particulates mix freely with a cleaning solution, they can rinse or wipe away, ready for appropriate disposal. SERVPRO technicians manipulate four specific elements during cleaning, working toward effective interactions that facilitate the loosening of residues in anticipation of removal.

Temperature

Applying heat increases the speed of chemical reactions set in motion when we introduce cleaning products. We adjust the temperature with care, vigilantly avoiding damage to surfaces and the production of hazardous fumes or other unintended consequences.

Agitation

Causing movement across the soiled surface dislodges adhered coatings and assures all parts of the surface are in contact with the cleaning solution. Examples of agitation include:

  • Brushing
  • Scrubbing
  • Application of water or air pressure
  • Use of ultrasonic vibration (sound waves) -- submersion in a tank

Chemical Action

Choosing the correct cleaning product causes reactions that loosen the residues. Effective reactions that lift away or remove soiling include:

  • Dissolving
  • Emulsifying
  • Bleaching
  • Oxidizing
  • Altering pH
  • Digesting

Time

Calculating reasonable and appropriate dwell times for cleaning products to work efficiently without harming the soiled surface.

SERVPRO techs and homeowners look over water damage to a home. If you experience water damage this winter call us immediately, we are here to help!

As the northeast braces for the first winter storm of the season, it has been preceded by below-freezing temperatures. When the temperature drops this low many homes and businesses become susceptible to potential water damage.  Many times this comes in the form of a burst pipe. When poorly insulated cooper or pex water pipes are exposed to freezing temperatures the water inside the pipe can freeze and expand causing the pipe to crack and burst. If this burst goes unnoticed for a long enough period of time the potential for water damage to the structure of the building grows exponentially. This is why it is so important to call an experienced restoration company. If you experience water damage from a burst pipe this winter, contact us immediately!

Beach House Storm Damage Repair

11/4/2019 (Permalink)

Sunset behind the Newport, RI bridge. Newport Rhode Island and the surrounding areas are vulnerable to damage from high wind coastal storms.

Last week almost the entire east coast experienced a heavy rain and wind storm that caused power outages up and down the coast. In New England, the most powerful parts of the storm occurred overnight so many were unaware of the power outage until they woke up to flashing clocks in the morning. Furthermore, many coastal homeowners and business owners were unaware (and may still be unaware) about damage caused to their properties during this "flash" wind storm. Along the beaches of Westerly, RI debris such as shingles, aluminum flashing, and lumber could be seen amongst the rock walls and along the beach. This debris was the result of high winds that battered highly vulnerable homes and businesses on the coast. If your home or business was damaged by this most recent storm, call our office today.

A Professional Restoration Company Can Save You Money In A Water Damage

3/6/2019 (Permalink)

When your home or business is struck by a water damage event, such as a flood, burst pipe, or roof leak, you will see many restoration options in a google search. Here is why it is so important to carefully consider the company you choose to repair your property.

1. Evaluating exactly what can and cannot be saved in the property is crucial. This is where our experienced managers quickly determine the best course of action to save as much of the structure as possible. This first step can determine a huge chunk of your upfront costs for repair and materials for replacement.

2. Drying Equipment. If the company you hire is not using the best drying and air scrubbing equipment available, chances are they will need to use that equipment on your property for a longer period of time, costing you more money. Our techs are trained to work and act efficiently and we invest in the best possible restoration equipment so everything we do is efficient. In the long run, this is the best possible way to save our client's money.

3. We offer all phases of restoration and reconstruction services. Again, as we strive to be an efficient company we employ a team of talented and experienced craftsmen and carpenters to remove the need to hire subcontractors on your project and to be 100% sure your job will be completed professionally.

Despite a mild December; Winter is Coming

1/11/2019 (Permalink)

Sure we will have to wait until April for 'Winter to Come' in the world of Westeros, but here in New England, despite the mild December, winter is finally here. Below freezing temperatures have been consistent the last few weeks and it feels like snow will be on the ground any day now. Are you prepared? And more importantly is your home or commercial property prepared for the extended freezing cold weather? Here are some things you can do to make sure your home is ready for winter.

  • Check attic and basement eves - If you live in an older New England home chances are you have a vented attic if this is the case double check to make sure attic insulation is still in place and working and that there are no drafts in the attic or basement. If you have any exposed water pipes you should insulate them and if necessary install an electric pipe heating cable that will monitor the pipes and keep them warm enough to keep water flowing.
  • Make sure water to outside water faucets is shut off - Leaving water on can cause the faucet to freeze and leak, this slow leak will allow ice to form around your hose bib and your foundation with the potential to cause structure and water damage to the property.
  • Monitor the temperature in your garage - If you have an attached garage there is a chance there are water pipes within the ceiling or walls adjacent to the garage, monitor the temperature of your attached garage and, if needed, install an emergency heat source to kick on when the temperature is low. This can save you thousands in water damage in the case a pipe were to burst!

Christmas Tree Fires Account for Millions of Dollars in Property Damage Annually

12/12/2018 (Permalink)

Christmas trees and holiday decorations account for millions of dollars in property damage every year. Please share these basic safety tips to ensure your family's well being this holiday season.

  • Look for a fresh tree, these are less likely to catch fire. Vibrant green needles that do not fall off easily. The Frazier Fir is a great choice and has a softer needle that does not dry out as quickly.
  • Remember to water your tree immediately after getting it home and in the stand. Continue to water the tree until it stops taking water.
  • Keep your tree away from heat sources, candles and other electronics.
  • All your Christmas lights should be UL or ETL/ITSNA tested for safety, and you should throw away damaged lights.
  • Be sure to plug outdoor lights into a ground-fault circuit interrupter protected receptacle.
  • Keep all your candles away from your Christmas tree, surrounding furniture and décor. If possible avoid candles all together especially this time of year when there tend to be more flammable items around the home.
  • Don’t forget to turn your Christmas tree lights off each night.
  • When your tree's needles begin to fall, it is time to take it down.

Follow these guidelines and avoid being another statistic in the National Fire Protection Association or United States Fire Administration report this holiday season. Of course, if you do have an emergency contact us immediately along with the local emergency response departments needed. We will be there to help you get things back, "Like it never even happened."

Recently we were called upon by a local school for an emergency cleaning. This wasn't our typical emergency, such as a flood, fire or storm damage, but instead was a job that needed to be completed quickly due to the start of the school year!

When preparing to open for the 2018-2019 school year many teachers and faculty complained about a musky odor in the building. We were called in to test the quality of the air in the building and were able to detect impurities in the air, and with only 3 days to go until the start of school.

Due to the expedited time schedule, we brought in dozens of techs and a management team that would teach and lead our techs to ensure the school was safe and ready for students on the first day.

Storm Damage Repair & Dry Out

9/24/2018 (Permalink)

Heavy rains from Hurricane Florence and other weather systems have soaked the east coast of the United States over the last couple of weeks. Our team of Disaster Restoration techs have been working around the clock restoring and drying out homes and businesses up and down the eastern seaboard, but we're not done yet! In fact, we have only just begun what we consider to be one of our busiest times of the year. There are of course major events, like hurricanes, that when they occur require several teams of restoration experts to band together. And there is also the change of seasons that will bring with it the cold weather that will inevitably cause pipes to burst, ice dam and snowmelt flooding. We recommend to all of our neighbors to take this time of year to prepare for the winter and other potential weather-related events that could cause damage to your property. Being prepared is the first step to a successful restoration.

Commercial Fire & Water Restoration

8/27/2018 (Permalink)

Recently we needed to pull resources from our multiple franchise locations to a fire & water restoration at a food distribution center. The partially damaged building needed to be restored quickly to prevent contamination and mold growth in areas of the warehouse that were not directly affected by the fire. In disaster restoration time is always crucial and we train our techs to work quickly and efficiently to ensure the environment is returned to normal ASAP! In this particular case, we knew there were hundreds of thousands of dollars in perishable products that were at risk to be damaged so we arrived on scene within hours and had equipment and techs on site shortly thereafter. We were able to clean and restore the facilities within 48 hours in time to re-open only 3 days after the fire damage occurred.

After safely removing old insulation and asbestos from the attic ceilings of the building and replacing it with modern insulation we began the restoration process. Our goal was to keep as much of the original wood flooring in place and to update and modernize the kitchens, bathrooms. We also updated most of the electrical components in the home as well as heating and water systems. If you own or know of a home that is need of restoration please contact our offices today!

2018 Report: Above Average Rainfall Throughout the Northeast

6/14/2018 (Permalink)

It seems like it is raining every other day here in the northeast lately, so over here in our SERVPRO® of Newport & Bristol Counties office, we decided to figure out just how much more rain has fallen in 2018. Using tools available on the National Weather Service website we were able to generate this map showing rainfall accumulation for the year and comparing it to the average amount of rain for this time of year. As you can see rainfall along the coastal regions of Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New York are 4"-12" above average! This will be something to keep an eye on going into what many believe will be a busy hurricane season this year. If your home or business is near any of our located near a resevour, river, lake or pond keep our number on hand, we will continue to monitor the weather!

Association for Facilities Engineering at the Matunuk Oyster Bar

6/14/2018 (Permalink)

We love to get involved in local events big and small. Recently we were excited to be invited for a tour of the Matunuck Oyster Farm in Charlestown Rhode Island. We attended the event hosted by the Association for Facilities Engineering at the Matunuk Oyster Bar and enjoyed a boat tour of the farm guided by the Matunuck Oyster Bar's owner Perry. We learned about the importance of protecting the fragile saltwater bay ecosystems along the coast of the state and how climate change and severe weather is impacting these areas today and will continue to do so in the future.

Thank you to the Matunuck Oyster Bar for your generousity and for allowing us to learn more about your amazing facilities. It was great meeting other like-minded business owners on this impressive tour.

Water Extraction Reduces Overall Costs

5/8/2018 (Permalink)

As an insurance agent, adjuster or property manager you may wonder why SERVPRO extracts water from soaked rugs and carpets that will most likely end up being thrown away anyway! There are a few reasons for this; first, the weight of a wet carpet or rug requires more manpower to remove and move, so extracting water reduces the weight of the carpets to be removed significantly. This not only makes the material easier to lift and requires fewer technicians but it is safer for our technicians to handle, reducing on-site injuries. Also, by removing the weight of the water we reduce the amount of total weight of the waste removed, helping to keep waste removal fees down. Finally, by extracting and removing the water from wet carpets and rugs we are removing the water from the property entirely! The importance of this cannot be understated because removing water from the property quickly is the first step in preventing further structural damage and mold growth. Dragging wet rugs and carpets from a property without extraction can leave water behind and exasperate an already dire situation.

Winter Water Damage

12/7/2017 (Permalink)

In the wintertime, we tend to forget about mold becoming an issue in the home. For the most part, we associate mold with humid summer days creating the perfect environment for mold growth in dark, damp spaces… but this is not always the case. For example, mold growth can strike quickly after a flood or fire even in the winter. We recently encountered a home in which the pipes had burst on the third floor of the dwelling. With no one home the water soaked the home for 2 days before the leak was discovered. Our crew began working in the home within 72 hours of the disaster and within that time mold growth could be seen on wet surfaces throughout the house. If not properly treated mold can quickly make its way into difficult to find places like vents and ducts where it may cause health issues to those in the home if not removed.

Residential Fires

11/7/2017 (Permalink)

Residential fires are some of the most difficult situations we encounter. Not because our crew is unprepared for the event, but because the personal loss of a home and possessions is extremely painful for the owners and can lead to a highly scrutinized job site. Our crew is prepared for this and sympathizes with the anguish each and every homeowner feels after a disaster has impeded their life. We are trained to move quickly understanding that every moment saved at the onset of disaster recovery increases the chance of a successful mitigation exponentially. We carefully attempt to salvage any items that can be restored and store them in our warehouse to be cleaned and dried. After the structure has been reviewed we then begin the cleaning process, being careful to protect any undamaged areas of the home before we start. Once clean we can begin drying and assessing the damage totality, our trained crew includes carpenters and other subcontractors that can help to expedite the recovery process and get you back in your home faster.

Hotel Lobby Flood

10/30/2017 (Permalink)

When disaster strikes a business or commercial property SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties has scored high ranks with our clients, we understand the importance of ensuring a business or commercial is in operation as soon as possible. In many cases we are able to isolate the area where the disaster has struck and the business can remain in operation. Recently we were called to a disaster at a hotel where water from persistent rains flooded the lobby. Upon arrival our first goal was to clean and restore as much of the lobby as possible. We knew that by doing so we could allow the hotel to operate and service their customers as we continued to mitigate and dry the public areas of the business. Our team built temporary barriers to block the view of the equipment and the crew as the mitigation work was underway, 24/7 until the lobby was 100% recovered.

Serving Newport, RI

10/30/2017 (Permalink)

Some of the most rewarding work we do is directly in our community. When we are called to a disaster in our hometown of Newport, RI we know that our every-step is on display to individuals we may end up seeing around the community many times over afterward and we must step-up our performance. A few years ago we had been called to a summer home which had flooded after a winter storm. We were on the scene within the hour and began the process of mitigating and repairing the home. Little did we know the owner of the home was also a local business owner and his boatyard also suffered damage after the storm. Thanks to our crew and their professional approach in the beach home we were called into work on and mitigate the water damaged suffered in the warehouse and office building of the yard.

Flooded House, Now What!

10/23/2017 (Permalink)

All too often homeowners wait too long before contacting a water damage mitigation expert in the event of a flood. A good example is when an appliance (like the dishwasher or washing machine) breaks and leaks throughout the house. If you are lucky you realize the leak right away and are able to fix the problem before any real damage is done. But many times a small leak goes undetected for weeks until the leak expands and parts of the home begin to show water damage.

In one particular example, a two-story single family home was set up with the washer and dryer on the second floor. The homeowners left the machine running before leaving for the day and returned home to find the supply hose had become detached from the washing machine and was draining onto the carpets and throughout the house.

They attempted to dry the mess themselves and waited 5 days before contacting SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties multiplying the problem and damage to their home.

Celebrate Summer Safety

7/25/2017 (Permalink)

Summer is a time to enjoy the great outdoors, but it is also important to keep safety in mind. Consider the following tips, provided by the National Fire Protection Association to keep you and your family safe all summer long.

  • When using a charcoal grill, only use starter fluids designed for barbecue grills; do not add fluid after coals have been lit.
  • When using a gas grill, ensure the hose connection is tight; check hoses for leaks. Applying soapy water to the hoses will easily and safely reveal any leaks.
  • Always build a campfire downwind from the tent area. Clear vegetation and dig a pit before building your fire. Extinguish the fire before going to sleep or leaving the campsite.
  • Store liquid fire starter (not gasoline) away from your tent and campfire and only use dry kindling to freshen a campfire.

Your local SERVPRO® of Newport & Bristol Counties wishes you a safe and happy summer!

Fire Pit Safety Tips

5/2/2017 (Permalink)

Fire pits are a great way to accessorize your yard and they are perfect for gatherings! When you use your fire pit, make sure you are keeping you and your property safe by following these safety tips!

Location

Make sure you keep your fire pit AT LEAST 10 feet away from any structures. This may help prevent sparks from hitting your home and excessive smoke from entering your or your neighbor’s home.

Do NOT put your fire pit under tree branches or on a covered deck. Make sure your fire pit is in a location where the flames and sparks will not hit any objects.

Under the Pit

If your fire pit is not built into the ground, make sure you have stone, brick, gravel, or concrete under the pit. This will help prevent the area below the pit from burning. You should NEVER place your pit over dry grass or over a wooden deck. This is because the heat from the base of it pit may spark a fire to the ground below it.

Weather

Do not use your fire pit if it is windy. The wind may push sparks from the fire to an area that is flammable.

When you are using your fire pit, you should notice the direction the breeze is blowing. You should move any object out of the way of where the breeze is blowing to help prevent a fire from occurring.

Lighting the Pit

When lighting your fire pit, use a commercial fire starter pack. Do NOT use lighter fluid or gasoline to light the pit or to relight fires. You should always keep water nearby just in case the fire inside of the pit spreads.

Before you use your fire pit, you should check your town’s laws on fire pits. Some towns require a permit and an inspection. If the unfortunate happens, call the experts at SERVPRO. We will restore your property and make it look “Like it never even happened.”

Should you Clean your Air Ducts?

4/24/2017 (Permalink)

It’s that time of year where everyone wonders if they should get their air ducts cleaned. Dirty air ducts usually spread dust, dirt, and mold around your property. This can lead to poor indoor air quality.

While it is normal to have some dust and pollen in your air ducts, you might want to consider getting your ducts cleaned if the following is true:

1. There is mold growing inside of the air ducts

It is not always easy to see if mold is present. If your service provider says that mold is growing, ask him to show you where it is. If you do have mold in your air ducts, please note that it is impossible to completely get rid of mold.

2. Your ducts are infested with vermin

Do you have unwanted guests living in your air ducts? If so, you should call an expert to get them out as quickly as possible in order to prevent the problem from getting worse.

3. Your ducts are clogged with debris and dust

If your air ducts are clogged, you should call a professional to clean out your ducts. A clog can contribute to poor air quality.

If you have experienced any of the above issues, make sure you find out what caused the issue because it is likely that it will happen again.

How to Prevent Mold

4/19/2017 (Permalink)

Mold can grow everywhere, from your carpet to your window seals, and even inside of your walls! Sometimes it is easy to detect mold, and other times it’s more difficult. While it is impossible to completely eliminate mold, here are some tips on how to prevent mold from growing.

Dry Wet Areas

Mold needs moisture to grow. You can help prevent mold from growing by wiping away condensation and by not leaving wet items around. Always make sure you wipe down the bathroom after you shower and hang wet towels in a room with good air circulation to dry.

Proper Ventilation

Poor ventilation allows water to stay in the area and may help mold grow. If you are doing an activity that produces a lot of moisture, like cooking, make sure you are using the exhaust fan. You can always open up a window in addition to using an exhaust fan.

Monitor Humidity

The EPA recommends indoor air humidity should be between 30 and 60 percent. You can keep an eye on humidity levels in your home with a moisture meter which can be picked up at your local hardware store.

If your home has high humidity levels, you may want to get a dehumidifier. This will help keep humidity levels down.

Direct Moisture Away from your Home

If your property constantly is flooded, you may want to develop a way to prevent water from getting inside of your home. This will help prevent water damage and it may help prevent mold from growing inside of your home. This can be done in a few ways.

  1. Create a barrier
  2. Dig a trench
  3. Build a dry well

If you suspect that you have mold growing in your home, call SERVPRO. The experts at SERVPRO will inspect and assess your property with our specialized training and equipment. We will make your property look “Like it never even happened”.

Types of Fire Damage

4/14/2017 (Permalink)

According to the NFPA, the number of fires your household can expect in an average lifetime is five. Any fire regardless of size will cause damage to your property. Fire damage is classified into six different classes and the type of fire damage can be classified in two ways.

Six Types of Fire Damage

Fires are classified into six different classes. These classes are Class A, Class B, Class C, Class D, Class E, and Class F.

  • Class A: Involves flammable solids, plastics, paper, rubber, cloth, and wood
  • Class B: Damage is caused by flammable solids that became liquids and by liquids. Examples of these types of substance are gasoline, petrol, oil, plastics and, paints. Cooking oils and fats are excluded from this class
  • Class C: Involves flammable gasses such as hydrogen, natural gas, butane, and propane
  • Class D: Damage is caused by combustible gasses such as potassium, sodium, and magnesium
  • Class E: This class is a combination of Class A and Class B but, it involves electrical elements
  • Class F: Damage is caused by cooking oils and fats. Cooking oils and fats are in their own class because the fire is usually hotter and more damage is caused.

Fire extinguishers are not a one size fits all. Make sure you read the label on your fire extinguisher to see what types of fires it can put out. Some fire extinguishers are water based which would not be safe to use on a Class E fire. Also, check the expiration date on your fire extinguisher to make sure it is still good to use in case of an emergency.

Types of Fire Damage

Most insurance companies use two classifications for fire damage. These categories are primary damage and secondary damage.

  • Primary Damage: Damage is caused by direct flames to the structure or to objects inside of the structure
  • Secondary Damage: Damage is caused by corrosive substances, smoke, and water from putting the fire out

Secondary damage typically causes the most damage to the structure. This is because soot and smoke can work its way throughout the structure.

If you experience a fire in your home, the first step you should take is to call the fire department. Your second step should be to reach out to your insurance agent. Your final step should be calling SERVPRO. All SERVPRO franchises are available 24/7 with highly trained restoration technicians. SERVPRO specializes in fire and water damage and will get your property looking “Like it never even happened”.

5 Spring Cleaning Tips

4/13/2017 (Permalink)

Spring has officially sprung and that means it is time for spring cleaning! If you think the only way to clean your home is with harsh chemicals, think again! You can clean almost every surface in your home with distilled white vinegar. Get every room in your home looking clean and smelling fresh by following these spring cleaning tips.

Clean Carpet

Over the course of the winter, your carpet may have developed an odor and it may have sand, salt, and dirt trapped inside of it. Help eliminate the odor and remove anything trapped inside of the carpet by mixing essential oils and distilled white vinegar. Before applying this mixture, test it out on a small area of your carpet because some fabrics are sensitive and it may cause damage.

Clean Windows

Over time, windows get dirty or develop smudges. You can make your windows look crystal clear by mixing one part hot water and one part distilled white vinegar in a spray bottle. Simply spray the solution on the window and wipe away to clean.

Follow these three steps to make your windows truly shine.

  1. Clean from the top down.
  2. Do NOT clean your windows in direct sunlight. This will cause streaking.
  3. Avoid damage to your window frames by drying immediately.

Clean Mattress

Dust mites and odors are inevitable when it comes to mattresses. You can help eliminate them by doing the following steps.

  1. Remove all sheets and blankets from the bed.
  2. Spray mattress with distilled white vinegar.
  3. Sprinkle baking soda over the white vinegar and let it bubble.
  4. Place a towel over mattress for 1-2 hours or until dry.
  5. Vacuum up any residue from the baking soda.

Clean Refrigerator

You probably want to avoid using harsh chemicals where you store your food. Follow these steps to get your refrigerator looking like new!

  1. Remove all contents from the refrigerator.
  2. Wash shelves and the sides of the refrigerator with one part hot water and one part distilled white vinegar.
  3. Dry all areas of the refrigerator
  4. Wipe down jars before putting them back in the refrigerator.

Clean Bathtub

Over the course of time, your tub can build up with grime and soap residue. You can eliminate the buildup with ease by doing the following.

  1. Fill a spray bottle with one part hot water and one part distilled white vinegar
  2. Spray mixture in the tub and let it sit for 15 minutes.
  3. Wipe clean with a sponge or a towel
  4. Rise tub with water and wipe again

Homes Of Holiday Movies

Griswold Home in "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation."

Home Alone

“Buzz, your girlfriend…WOOF!”

Good news for “Home Alone” fans -- you can drive-by the famous McCallister family home at 671 Lincoln Avenue in Winnetta, Illinois. The 4,243-square-foot home is as large as it appeared in the film (4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms and 9 rooms in total). The residence was purchased in 2012 for over $1.5 million, according to Zillow.

Miracle on 34th Street

Despite the addition of a second-story window, little Susan Walker's "dream home" from "Miracle on 34th Street" appears just as it did almost 70 years ago.

Located at 24 Derby Road in Port Washington, New York, the single-family home features 7 rooms.

The home featured in John Hughes' 1994 remake starring Mara Wilson, is located at 771 Washington Road in Lake Forest, Illinois, and it's more than quadruple the size of the home from the original film. The Illinois house was listed for sale on Zillow in July for a cool $3.4 million.

Elf

Walter Hobbs (James Caan), father to Buddy (Will Ferrell), resided in the Upper West Side of New York City in the movie. The apartment was located at 55 Central Park West, where scenes from the 1984 film "Ghostbusters" took place as well.

The 19-floor co-op building was used for exterior shots but interior shots of the apartment may have been a set.

A Christmas Story

Beware of the Bumpass' dogs.

Thanks to "A Christmas Story" super-fan Brian Jones of Jacksonville, Florida, Ralphie's home located at 3159 W. 11th Street in Cleveland, Ohio, has been well-preserved from the inside and out.

Jones, who purchased the house in December 2004, turned it into a tourist attraction complete with a museum and gift shop open to the public.

For the past five years, he has even held eBay auctions inviting people to come and stay in the house where Ralphie lived with his mom, dad and little brother Randy.

This year, the winning bid was $8,700. The winner will get to spend two nights in the three-story, 1940s-style home complete with four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a loft, a leg lamp in the window and an old fashioned radio to listen to "Little Orphan Annie."

Scrooged

The comedic take on the Charles Dickens' “A Christmas Carol" starring Bill Murray (Frank Cross), told the laugh-out-loud story of a self-absorbed television executive who's visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve night

"Scrooged" was largely filmed in New York City with interior (lobby) and exterior shots of the 38-story, 516-foot Seagram Building located at 375 Park Avenue in Manhattan.

Other notable Big Apple locations from the movie can be seen on 5th Avenue and the 45 Rd. Courthouse Sq. subway station in Long Island City.

The Family Stone

With 5 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms, the 3,554 square-foot home from the "The Family Stone" still appears large enough to house a semi-awkward Christmas gathering, just as it did for the 2005 holiday film.

Built in 1860, the colonial sits at 144 Riverside Avenue, Riverside, Connecticut, and was sold in January 2008 for $4.1 million, according to Zillow.

With no up-to-date interior shots of the home, it's a wonder if Sybil Stone's (Diane Keating) clutter-filled kitchen and worn-in, cozy living room remain as they were 10 years ago.

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

Sad but true, the "Griswold House" from the classic Christmas comedy "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" sat in The Warner Bros. back lot. According to IMDB, the neighborhood where the Griswolds lived was the same as the one used on the 2009 television series "The Middle" (2009), which funny enough, featured Brian Doyle-Murray (Clark's boss Mr. Shirley) in a recurring role as the character Mr. Ehlert.

It's a Wonderful Life

George and Mary Bailey's “drafty old house" in the fictional town of "Bedford Falls" was also built as a residential set on the RKO Ranch in Encino, California, according to IMDB.

Mold Prevention Tips

11/21/2015 (Permalink)

WHY PREVENT MOLD?

Mold is a type of fungus. In nature, mold eats dead plants and animals, serving an important purpose. Mold can grow indoors, however, where it does not serve a purpose but can destroy materials. It can damage materials in your home. It can ruin carpet, even walls. Preventing mold is important because if mold takes hold, you can spend a fortune replacing ruined items.

Mold prevention is important because once it takes hold, it’s hard to get rid of it. If you see mold or notice a musty smell in your house, you have a mold problem and need to address it. If you don’t see or smell mold, you probably do not have a mold problem and you want to keep it that way. If you’re not sure if you have a mold problem, you can have a professional come in and conduct a test. Your home owner’s insurance may even pay for it.

HOW DO I PREVENT MOLD?

Mold requires organic material and moisture in order to grow and thrive. There is usually plenty of organic material in homes and it’s almost impossible to get rid of it all, so the key to mold prevention is eliminating excess moisture. Water leaks, high humidity and condensation all provide moisture that allows mold to grow. If your roof leaks or water comes in around windows, fix it. If humidity is high, invest in a dehumidifier.

If you experience flooding or a leak, you need to dry things out thoroughly. Use fans and a dehumidifier (or two), take up all carpet and remove all soaked objects until they can be dried. Some items may need to be discarded and replaced.

Make sure your home has adequate ventilation in areas like bathrooms, laundry rooms and attics. Energy efficient homes may hold moisture inside, in which case opening a window or turning on a fan when showering and cooking will help with mold prevention.

USE MATERIALS THAT PREVENT MOLD WHEN RENOVATING

You can purchase mold-resistant drywall or sheetrock, which are particularly useful in high-moisture areas like bathrooms and laundry rooms. Ask for mold-resistant products at your local home improvement store, or if you have a professional contractor handling your home renovations, ask him or her to use mold-resistant products whenever possible.

MONITOR INDOOR HUMIDITY

The Environmental Protection Agency recommends keeping indoor humidity between 30 and 60 percent. Purchase a moisture meter at your local hardware store and use humidifiers or dehumidifiers if necessary to keep the humidity at the right level to prevent mold.

DIRECT GROUND WATER AWAY FROM YOUR HOME

Another key to mold prevention is directing ground water away from your home. If the ground slopes toward your home, you’re likely to have leaking in your basement or in a crawlspace, which will lead to the growth of mold.

KEEP YOUR GUTTERS CLEAN

Clogged gutters often lead to leaky roofs. Prevent mold by preventing leaks. Clean your gutters regularly and if you notice stains on your ceiling, check the gutters for clogs and check the roof right away for leaks.
