How to Assess Fire Damage After a Fire Incident
11/26/2024 (Permalink)
Experiencing a fire in your home or business is a traumatic event that can leave lasting physical damage and emotional scars. Once the flames have been extinguished and the immediate danger has passed, the next crucial step is to assess the damage. However, this requires caution and careful consideration. This blog will guide you through safely assessing the fire damage to ensure you take the necessary steps to protect yourself and your property and begin the recovery process.
Wait for Professional Clearance
Before attempting to assess the damage to your property, ensure the fire department or emergency services have declared it safe to enter. Hidden dangers, such as smoldering materials or weakened structures, can often exist. Once clearance has been given, you should begin inspecting the damage.
Wear Proper Safety Gear
Safety should always be your top priority when assessing fire damage. Fire can leave behind toxic chemicals, structural hazards, and unstable areas. Wear the following gear to minimize health risks:
- Gloves
- Dust Mask or Respirator
- Safety Boots
- Protective Eyewear
Assess the Damage to Utilities
Fire can cause severe damage to electrical systems, plumbing, and gas lines. The following safety measures should be taken:
- Shut off utilities: If safe, turn off the electricity, gas, and water supply to avoid further hazards.
- Inspect electrical systems: Look for exposed wires, scorch marks, or signs of short circuits. Only attempt to turn on the power once an electrician has inspected the system.
- Gas lines: If you smell gas or suspect damage, evacuate immediately and call your gas utility provider or emergency services.
- Water Damage: Water used to extinguish a fire can cause additional damage to your property. Look for signs of water damage; our damage restoration pros can handle both water and fire damage restoration.
Document the Damage
Before any cleanup or repair work begins, take detailed photographs of the damage. This documentation will be crucial for insurance claims and help restoration professionals understand the scope of the damage. Make sure to capture both wide-angle shots and close-up details of affected areas:
- Burn marks or charring
- Structural damage
- Damaged personal items
- Smoke and soot residue

Summer Fire Safety Tips | SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties
6/16/2023 (Permalink)
It’s sweet summertime! We are ready to break out the shorts, the sunscreen and our backyard grills for some fun in the sun and a few BBQ nights with family and friends.
But while the summer season is one for everyone to enjoy, it does come with its own set of risks when it comes to fire.
It is important to stay safe while enjoying your backyard activities so you can avoid any sort of fire accident that could lead to a devastating house or property fire. Read on as our SERVPRO team explains some easy ways to stay safe around fire this summer.
Using Your Equipment SafelyIf you haven’t started up your grill for the season yet, now is the time to check it thoroughly for wear and tear or obvious issues. If you have a gas grill, check your propane tanks for leaks and kinks, and be sure your connections are set up safely. In addition, your propane tank should not have any dents in it or leaks either.
Charcoal grills have their own set of rules. Give your grill a good cleaning to remove ash and soot buildup, and set up your grill at least 10 feet away from your house or garage overhang. Smoke and wandering sparks can be a huge fire risk for your house.
Similarly, check your lawn mowers or other outdoor equipment for the same issues like dented tanks, leaks or cracks. Any sort of gas leak could lead to disastrous consequences.
Bonfire SafetyWho doesn’t love a good bonfire on a warm summer’s night? If you have a permanent bonfire pit in your backyard, keep it clean and ensure that grass or dead vegetation is far away from the ring.
Keep your flame under control, and never store your wood pile close by. All it takes is a single windy evening to start your whole pile ablaze.
Portable pits are becoming more popular these days, so if that’s how you enjoy a fire, set it up on a nonflammable surface and never put it in your garage once it is lit. Choose a level surface and don’t let the flames get too high. Once you are done with your fire for the night, ensure that the flame has been completely extinguished and your ashes are cold before heading inside.
Removing Debris Around the HouseA hot and dry summer can create wildfire conditions that could affect your home without much warning. Even though you can’t control a wildfire, you can reduce the amount of fuel in your yard. Clean up dried leaves, vegetation and fallen branches, and dispose of them off of your property.
Preventing a house fire is always preferred, but accidents can happen at any time. Thankfully, SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties is here to help with your restoration process! Call us day or night for fire damage assistance from your favorite local restoration team.
House fires can cause widespread damage. Our team can help with your recovery, so call SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties.

No matter how large or small the fire in your kitchen, it can cause significant damage that is difficult to clean up. The layer of soot left
No matter how large or small the fire in your kitchen, it can cause significant damage that is difficult to clean up. The layer of soot left on surfaces is one of the most frustrating aspects. Professional restoration companies should be able to quickly clean up after a fire and then they can handle cleaning up walls and ceilings. If soot is left on chrome furniture, it can cause irreparable damage to the rest of the furnishings.
It can also be dangerous if improper cleaning techniques are used. It can:
- Inject odorous soot deeper into surfaces
- Cause stains
- Furniture with restoration potential should be destroyed.
What is the best dry cleaning sponge for fire damage clean-up?
SERVPRO techs can bring dry cleaning sponges to your home in order to restore fire damage. High heat fires can cause light and powdery residues to organic materials. Liquids can exacerbate the problem by causing the residues to stick to the surfaces and making it more difficult to remove.
Techs use dry cleaning sponges to remove the soot from surfaces. The techs turn the sponge each time and dispose of any residues. This allows painted walls to be restored without the need for removal. It also saves homeowners the time and money of replacing them. The techs can use a sealant to give a new start to walls and ceilings that have particulate embedded too deep.
You must act quickly to minimize the damage and restore your home to its original condition as soon as possible.
Call SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties today at (401) 847-8145 to speak with a certified technician who will respond to any fire damage to your home.

Can Professionals Get Rid of Odors After Fire Damage to North Kingston Homes?
6/10/2021 (Permalink)
Fire can leave your property with many issues. Trust our experts to bring your home back to its original state "Like it never even happened."
SERVPRO's Odor Control Technicians Know How to Combat Odors After Fire Damage to Your North Kingston Home
Combating odors after fire damage to your North Kingston home can be quite a challenge. SERVPRO technicians apply scientific principles to understand the behavior of odor particles and design an effective deodorizing strategy to suit the specific conditions.
SERVPRO technicians understand that odor-causing smoke particles formed after fire damage to your North Kingston home can be microscopic. The smaller size of the particles allows them to penetrate deeper into porous surfaces after extensive smoke damage. The deodorant particles also must be small enough to reach the odor-causing particles and neutralize them. However, size is not the only factor determining how the odor-causing particles penetrate materials.
Factors That Help Smoke Particles Penetrate Materials in Fire Damaged Homes in North Kingston
Some of the important factors helping smoke particles penetrate surfaces of your North Kingston home that SERVPRO technicians recognize include-
- The porosity of the surface- Porous surfaces are more likely to absorb odors than non-porous surfaces.
- Amount of the residue- Heavier the residue after a fire and smoke damage, the greater the surface area of material it can impact and more difficult it is for SERVPRO techs to neutralize
- Exposure time- Longer exposure of the residue allows the odor-causing particles to penetrate deeper, making it difficult for SERVPRO to deodorize during house fire cleanup.
- Heat- Hotter particles can penetrate surfaces deeper. Also, porous surfaces tend to expand due to heat, making it easy for the particles to penetrate.

SERVPRO Commits to Approach Fire Damage in North Kingston with Restoration in Mind, Working Hard to Bring Our Treasured Centuries-Old Structures Back from Destruction
Business and residential areas in North Kingston include neighborhoods and smaller villages within the larger town's footprint. If they now seem like quiet, quaint spaces within a 21st-century city, your perceptions would not be wrong. But you also might not know about the fascinating details in the histories of these subdivisions in North Kingston that relate very impactful events that stretch back far more than three hundred years.
Who Were the Original Inhabitants of Wickford Village?
Before European contact, the lands comprising Wickford were hunted and fished by the indigenous Narragansett people. The Narragansett language died out in the 1800s, so it is difficult to prove the precise meaning of the tribe's name, but many modern members of the tribe believe it means "people of the little points and bays." It is not surprising that their name alludes to a jagged shoreline, as Wickford Village arose around an incredibly protected natural harbor.
Who Developed the Wickford Village Area Post-European Contact?
The Wickford Village portion of North Kingston owes its name to the town of Wickford in Essex, England. Situated on the west side of Narragansett Bay, the current village is just 20 minutes away from Newport, Rhode Island, connected by two bridges. What is now known as Wickford Village was settled in 1637. Roger Williams, a Puritan minister, author, and theologian, established Providence Plantations in the area, eventually known as the Colony of Rhode Island. As part of this plan, he bought land from the Narragansett sachem or chief Canonicus including part of Wickford's location. Williams adhered to an abolitionist viewpoint, studied the Narragansett language, and tried to develop the area consistent with
- Religious freedom
- Separation of church and state
- Fair dealings with indigenous peoples
Williams and another Puritan minister, Richard Smith, originally from Gloucester, England, founded trading posts near the harbor, and residential and business growth followed. Miller purchased Williams's post in 1651.
What Happened During Smith's Control of Wickford Village?
After a stay in Taunton in the Massachusetts Colony, Smith arrived in Wickford Village in 1637, the same year as Williams. Smith constructed a gabled house, which Williams spoke of as the first English-styled residence in the village and the greater North Kingston. Smith fortified his home, resulting in its later moniker as Smith's Castle. Smith obtained more land during his tenure in Wickford, developing what he called Cocumscussoc Plantation. The plantation centered the growing number of European settlers' church, political, and social life. As unrest with indigenous peoples intensified, a European settler named Joshua Tefft was executed at Smith's Castle in 1676 for fighting on the side of the Narragansetts.
Did Wickford Suffer Damage During King Philip's War?
Homes built under Smith's expansion of the Wickford settlement now contained within North Kingston were targets during the 1675–1678 time frame of King Philip's War, a conflict with the Naragannset and other indigenous peoples. Smith's Castle burned completely, and many other buildings faced destruction. Smith's son Richard Smith Jr. rebuilt in 1678 on the foundation laid nearly 30 years earlier. The second Smith's Castle is still in place, gaining fame as one of the most visited spots in the Wickford Village area. The majority of the village's historic homes and buildings built between King Philip's War and the American Revolution still house residents and provide space for the village's business district. Remarkably, almost all retain their original foundations.
What Role Did Wickford Village in North Kingston's Experience During the Revolutionary War?
On Poplar Point, jutting out into the maze of islands to the east of Wickford Harbor, there is a lighthouse and a plaque. The plaque, dedicated in 1936 by the Pettaquamscutt chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, describes the contribution of the Wickford Gun, a cannon active in skirmishes between the Revolutionary forces and the British. The cannon arrived in March of 1776 from the brand-new State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. The Newtown Rangers were a motley group of young boys and older men who determined to strike a blow in the British conflict. They made it their job to learn how to use the cannon. Their use of the Wickford gun featured:
- Establishment of three fortified locations, as the cannon was portable, including
- Poplar Point -- from which the British were driven after a direct hit by the gun
- Persistence, as the cannon needed repair after Tory sabotage:
- Master blacksmith Samuel Bissell "rode" the cannon making repairs at the rest of the Newton Rangers moved the gun to Judith's Point.
- The gun fired many rounds at the grounded British ship Syrene, resulting in all 166 men onboard surrendering to the Newtown Rangers.
Is Fire Damage Restoration of Historic Buildings Possible in North Kingston?
Wickford and the surrounding North Kingston's current inhabitants prefer fire damage restoration over teardowns and new construction. Residents honor the history and sacrifice of the early settlers and the 18th-century revolution. Many of the centuries-old buildings are owned by private citizens. They rely on our team's expertise to turn smoke and soot damage around, bringing properties back to their former glory.

SERVPRO Combines Simple and Advanced Restoration Techniques to Fix Fire Damage in North Kingston Properties Efficiently
Fires are highly destructive because of the soiling and material deterioration they leave in the properties that they affect. Even a small stove fire can have far reaching effects. Restoration of such damage is not only time consuming but also costly. When you involve SERVPRO in the restoration of your North Kingston property, it is possible to save time and money.
What determines the destructiveness of fire damage incidents in North Kingston?
Every fire incident in North Kingston unfolds differently, so the complexities that develop might vary. From the vast experiences our SERVPRO professionals have, we understand the common issues that influence damages, including:
• The time that is taken to respond to the incident
• The materials affected by the fire
• The processes used to quell the fire
A fire is not just destructive when it is burning but even in the aftermath of the incident. For instance, the residues produced by the combustion process, including soot and tar, have corrosive properties that stain materials or cause deterioration in other forms such as rusting of metallic materials. If you have metallic accessories such as chrome door handles, faucets, or other kinds of trim in the areas where most of the residues accumulate, you might incur high costs making replacements if you delay the response.
Firefighting processes might also cause problems despite being necessary for stopping the damage from flames and heat. Such damage depends on the degree of moisture saturation materials and contents in the house reach. Residues from firefighting chemicals such as foam can also cause some damages.
Are there viable options for reducing the damages that develop?
• Starting the restoration process early
• Cleaning most of the soiled items
• Isolating materials based on the level of damage
• Drying wet materials or using other approaches to manage moisture
Unlike damages that develop as the fire burns, the damages that develop later are controllable. Taking action soon after the incident happens is one of the best ways to minimize damages. Our SERVPRO crews can arrive at your property within four hours if you notify us in time. Starting water extraction at such an early stage or setting up dehumidifiers helps manage moisture levels in the building, thus limiting the negative effects it has on the exposed materials. For example, it is possible to stop mold development, which starts within 24 to 48 hours, by eliminating moisture from the building. Applying antimicrobial products at this stage also helps check microbial growth.
A casual look at fire-damaged items or materials rarely reveals the true extent of the problem. For instance, the depth of charring, odor penetration, or the level of staining is not easy to address when everything is covered in soot. It is possible to waste time trying to clean or restore unsalvageable items while overlooking the salvageable ones. Such oversight might exacerbate damages. A straightforward solution our SERVPRO crews use to resolve this issue is grouping the affected items in your house based on the level of damage before starting any restorative steps. We separate items into groups of salvageable, unsalvageable, and questionable items. Since the decision to restore or dispose of the items with questionable damages is not easy to make, we set aside such items for restoration after other issues are addressed.
Which materials may amplify the level of damages you have to deal with after a fire incident?
• Synthetic materials
• Old materials
• Porous materials
When fire burns plastics or synthetic fabrics, the smoke produced has different properties, unlike fire from natural materials like wood or fabrics such as cotton. Synthetic materials tend to produce wet smoke residues which adhere to surfaces requiring specialized cleaning processes to remove the residues. In some cases, the only option to restore such items is to resurface the affected item.
Our SERVPRO professionals evaluate the residues deposited on surfaces to determine the best removal procedures. We can remove residues physically through vacuuming, dusting with absorbent materials, or agitate with air or high water pressure. We can also remove the residues chemically using chemical sponges, detergents, or specially formulated cleaning products.
Why is it challenging to restore old materials affected by fire damage?
Surfaces such as walls or furniture items made from older materials might be harder to restore through cleaning since residues penetrate beyond the surface. Such outcomes develop because aging tends to open up pores in materials or finishes applied on surfaces such as paint. Deeply embedded residues require advanced cleaning techniques to remove.
The issues that determine whether a fire restoration exercise is cost-effective or not might only vary slightly. SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties helps make the distinction, thus choosing the solutions most appropriate for your property. Call us at (401) 847-8145 to help. We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster!
A Fire Caused By a Faulty Cooking Appliance Left Me Dealing With Fire Damage in North Kingston. Where Do I Seek Help?
9/15/2020 (Permalink)
When we are done, the fire damage can seem, “Like it never even happened.”
Call SERVPRO Restorers in North Kingston to Help You With The Fire Damage Restoration Process
When a house fire occurs, homeowners are often left stranded about what to do. The soot and smoke residues spread extensively even to unaffected areas of your North Kingston home. If ignored for an extended period, the residues can begin to discolor surfaces, and odors may continue to become more potent.
Can smoke residues get into my HVAC system?
Fire damage in your North Kingston property can spread even to areas you cannot expect. During the fire incident, your HVAC system may collect and retain moisture, smoke, and gaseous emissions, among other contaminants. This can happen even when your HVAC system is not operating. It can affect the air quality of your property and the operations of the HVAC system.
At SERVPRO, we have certified indoor air professionals who have decades of experience and access to advanced duct cleaning systems equipped with the necessary tools to inspect your HVAC system. The duct-cleaning package includes a strong vacuum and an efficient filtering system. The vacuum pulls contaminants and soils into the filtering system that prevents residues and bacteria from being reintroduced into the indoor environment.
What damage can smoke residues cause?
Even after containing a small fire in your property, some surfaces can suffer staining and discoloration. If the situation is ignored for more than 48 hours, the ash and soot produced by the fire can discolor surfaces such as:
• Ceilings
• Vinyl
• Wood
• Walls
Besides, soot can also etch and corrode materials such as metal and glass. The corrosion can affect your home’s structural integrity. Hiring SERVPRO’s professional restorers within 48 hours can reduce the chances of permanent smoke damage occurring.
How can you remove the smoke odor?
Smoke lingers in confined surfaces like furniture, clothes, and upholstery. No matter the size of a fire in your property, the odor can be intense and last for an extended period. Without the right cleaning techniques and deodorization, the smell can infect your valuable items and the structure. That can make it difficult for you and your family to live in the property. If you intend to sell your property in the future, the odor can reduce its value.
Since the fire started in the kitchen, our professionals can use an enzyme digester, which works effectively on protein materials to eliminate the smell. The product breaks down protein molecules into simple, soluble substances that bacteria can absorb. We can also run air scrubbers to improve the air quality in your home.
To prevent additional destruction in your property after a fire, contact SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties at (401) 847-8145. When we are done, the fire damage can seem, “Like it never even happened.”

How Can I Get Smoke Damage Off My Walls and Ceilings After a Kitchen Fire?

Kitchen fires are particularly hard to remediate. SERVPRO has the know-how to restore your kitchen.
SERVPRO Techs Have Specialized Training in the Removal of all Types of Fire Loss from Your North Kingston Home
It does not matter if the fire in your kitchen was large or small; either type can leave large amounts of damage to clean up. One of the most frustrating is the layer of soot that gets left behind on surfaces. Post-fire cleanup efforts from a professional restoration services company should begin as rapidly as possible and let them handle the cleanup of walls and ceilings. When soot covers chrome furnishings, it is caustic and can ruin anything it lands on if it remains too long. When incorrect cleaning methods get used, it can:
- Drive odorous soot more deeply into surfaces
- Cause stains
- Destroy finishes on furnishings that had restoration potential
How Does a Dry Cleaning Sponge Work for Fire Damage Cleanup?
One of the many tools that SERVPRO techs bring to your North Kingston home for fire damage restoration services is dry cleaning sponges. When high heat fires burn organic materials, they leave deposits of light, powdery residues. If liquids get applied, it compounds the issues and drives the residues into the surface and worsens the problem. The techs use the dry cleaning sponges to pick up the soot and lift it away from the surfaces. They turn the sponge with each pass and then dispose of it along with the residues. In this way, painted walls can get restored and not need removal, thus saving the homeowner the cost of replacement and time for rebuilding. In cases where the sheetrock stays in place, but the particulate has gotten driven too deeply into the wall or ceiling, the techs can apply a sealant for a fresh start that only needs priming and painting.
Fire damage needs fast action to lessen the loss and get your home back to normal as fast as possible. Contact SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties at (401) 847-8145, and the certified techs are available 24/7 to handle any fire loss to your home.

Our personnel train extensively to demolish ruined material and remove it without further damage to your home. Experienced builders and other specialists can then repair, replace, or restore all of this in your residence.

Whether your favorite foundation has burned on the surface of your sink, or a container of soap has melted into a sticky mess, we have a way to help you. Our SERVPRO techs can investigate the cause of the soot and then apply that knowledge to breaking it down with specific cleaning products. Soot stains can vary depending on the burned material, so not all cleaners work the same. Working with professionals can help ensure your home might be able to return to its preloss state.
What About the Smell? How Can SERVPRO Help With That?

SERVPRO Saves Furniture From Fire Damage in Newport
One of the most deceptively difficult types of fire damage to cleanup happens in the kitchens of homes across the United States. When a protein combusts, the fats become airborne and coat surfaces in the vicinity.
A homeowner in Newport needed help with fire damage cleanup to his kitchen. A pan caught on fire and rather than cover it; someone in the home mistakenly used water to extinguish the fire. When water contacts hot oil, it immediately expands and transforms into a vapor, making the flames spread and more significant loss.
Containment and Air Quality Improvement
The techs set up containment around the kitchen doorway and vents to ensure no further cross-contamination occurred in the home from soot. Air scrubbers run continuously during mitigation to capture airborne particulate.
Removal of Charred Items
SERVPRO technicians found that the cabinets over the stove, sheetrock, and stove required disposal as they were too charred for restoration. Because unhealthy soot particles exist smaller than the eye can see and easily contaminate foodstuffs, much of the food in the pantry got removed as part of the cleanup.
Restoration of Furniture
The homeowner assumed his dining set was a loss due to the coverage of soot on the chairs and table in the vicinity of the fire.
Although the set was not of great monetary value, it had significant sentimental value. Upon inspection of the furnishings, SERVPRO techs stated the probability for the restoration of the pieces was high.
The techs wiped away the debris and residues on the chairs and table using specially formulated detergent cleaning agents and sponges. A final buffing removed all signs of the smoke damage.
Final Odor Control Measures
Once the charred items got disposed of and the remaining surfaces cleaned of all the residues, the kitchen smelled much better but still retained residual smoke odors. SERVPRO techs set up hydroxyl generators to neutralize any remaining odors safely in the home.
SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties at (401) 847-8145 uses the latest technology and advanced cleaning methods to restore properties with fire damage and make it "Like it never even happened."

Application of Enzymes in Protein Fire Damage affecting your Bristol Home

Let us help you get your Kingston kitchen back in order after a fire incident.
Fire Damage in Kingston Kitchen Calls For Professional Restoration Services
Fire Damage Kingston
Leaving the stove unattended is responsible for over fifty percent of house fires in the US. When cooking with fatty foods like meat products, it is essential to keep an eye on the cooking throughout. Grease from animal fats can ignite rapidly and, because they are oil-based, throwing water at the problem can make things worse. While most cooking fires are brought under control relatively quickly, the area around the kitchen, as well as sometimes in adjacent rooms, can become thick with greasy, odorous soot deposits.
You may find that restoring grease fire damage in your Kingston kitchen is more of a challenge than dry fires. Water and oil repel each other, which means approaching a protein fire in the same way you would approach living room fire can lead to spreading wet-soots around. SERVPRO technicians can gather valuable intel on the types of equipment and cleaners we may need to restore your home by speaking to you directly or by pre-testing soot deposits, testing pH levels, and distinguishing between wet or dry smoke.
A challenge facing restorers of a protein fire is that many of the grease stains are insoluble in water. Equally, using powerful solvents in a cooking area may have adverse effects on certain materials, finishes, or odors. To combat this, SERVPRO restorers can use natural organic compounds to break down proteins and make them water-soluble. Enzymes are a living organism that can digest soils and make them easier to wash away without leaving behind odors or risk causing acidic damage to surfaces.
Since enzymes are living microbes, there must be certain practices put in place to use them effectively. There is a careful balancing act to using enzymes correctly, which involves maintaining average temperature, neutral acidity, and moisture, which allows them to thrive. SERVPRO can achieve this by bringing in portable heaters and repeated dampening the surface. Neutralizing surfaces with acid or alkaline levels can be achieved by applying solutions relative to the needed balance. Overall, enzyme cleaning can be ultra-effective with a short dwell time of just fifteen minutes to one hour.
Protein damages are exceptionally tough to clear away without the right intel and products. Contact SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties at (401) 847-8145.

SERVPRO Says--Call Us for Fire Damage Cleanup and Restoration in Kingston
North Kingston Fire Damage Residue Cleanup Basics
After a fire in your North Kingston home, it can be hard to imagine that any efforts can bring the scorched and soot-covered surfaces surrounding you back to preloss condition. The fire insurance industry has confidence that our well-trained and equipped restoration professionals can minimize disruption to you and your family while also saving time and money through efficient and effective cleaning of fire residues. We master the principles and elements of cleaning through the comprehensive Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) courses.
Cleaning Principles
Our goal is to transform the fire damage in your North Kingston home back to the appearance, function, and comfort you enjoyed before the blaze. Fire residues vary, even within the same dwelling, depending on the materials burned, the temperature and oxygen levels during the fire, the air movement, and the surfaces affected. We hit the marks by applying the following principles to your unique circumstances:
- Discovery and identification of fire residues through a full-home inspection
- Evaluation of the characteristics and durability of the soiled surfaces through pre-testing
- Capture, removal, and disposal of residues through careful matching of techniques and products to the data gathered above
Cleaning Elements
The ultimate purpose of fire cleanup is to dislodge and suspend the residues deposited on surfaces. Once the particulates mix freely with a cleaning solution, they can rinse or wipe away, ready for appropriate disposal. SERVPRO technicians manipulate four specific elements during cleaning, working toward effective interactions that facilitate the loosening of residues in anticipation of removal.
Temperature
Applying heat increases the speed of chemical reactions set in motion when we introduce cleaning products. We adjust the temperature with care, vigilantly avoiding damage to surfaces and the production of hazardous fumes or other unintended consequences.
Agitation
Causing movement across the soiled surface dislodges adhered coatings and assures all parts of the surface are in contact with the cleaning solution. Examples of agitation include:
- Brushing
- Scrubbing
- Application of water or air pressure
- Use of ultrasonic vibration (sound waves) -- submersion in a tank
Chemical Action
Choosing the correct cleaning product causes reactions that loosen the residues. Effective reactions that lift away or remove soiling include:
- Dissolving
- Emulsifying
- Bleaching
- Oxidizing
- Altering pH
- Digesting
Time
Calculating reasonable and appropriate dwell times for cleaning products to work efficiently without harming the soiled surface.
SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties is ready to apply the fire restoration industry's best practices to make it "Like it never even happened." Call (401) 847-8145 for a professional assessment and fire recovery project plan.
Christmas Tree Fires Account for Millions of Dollars in Property Damage Annually
12/12/2018 (Permalink)
Christmas trees and holiday decorations account for millions of dollars in property damage every year. Please share these basic safety tips to ensure your family's well being this holiday season.
- Look for a fresh tree, these are less likely to catch fire. Vibrant green needles that do not fall off easily. The Frazier Fir is a great choice and has a softer needle that does not dry out as quickly.
- Remember to water your tree immediately after getting it home and in the stand. Continue to water the tree until it stops taking water.
- Keep your tree away from heat sources, candles and other electronics.
- All your Christmas lights should be UL or ETL/ITSNA tested for safety, and you should throw away damaged lights.
- Be sure to plug outdoor lights into a ground-fault circuit interrupter protected receptacle.
- Keep all your candles away from your Christmas tree, surrounding furniture and décor. If possible avoid candles all together especially this time of year when there tend to be more flammable items around the home.
- Don’t forget to turn your Christmas tree lights off each night.
- When your tree's needles begin to fall, it is time to take it down.
Follow these guidelines and avoid being another statistic in the National Fire Protection Association or United States Fire Administration report this holiday season. Of course, if you do have an emergency contact us immediately along with the local emergency response departments needed. We will be there to help you get things back, "Like it never even happened."
Commercial Fire & Water Restoration

The partially damaged building needed to be restored quickly to prevent contamination and mold growth in areas of the warehouse that were not directly affected by the fire. In disaster restoration time is always crucial and we train our techs to work quickly and efficiently to ensure the environment is returned to normal ASAP! In this particular case, we knew there were hundreds of thousands of dollars in perishable products that were at risk to be damaged so we arrived on scene within hours and had equipment and techs on site shortly thereafter. We were able to clean and restore the facilities within 48 hours in time to re-open only 3 days after the fire damage occurred.

Fire Pit Safety Tips
5/2/2017 (Permalink)
Fire pits are a great way to accessorize your yard and they are perfect for gatherings! When you use your fire pit, make sure you are keeping you and your property safe by following these safety tips!
Location
Make sure you keep your fire pit AT LEAST 10 feet away from any structures. This may help prevent sparks from hitting your home and excessive smoke from entering your or your neighbor’s home.
Do NOT put your fire pit under tree branches or on a covered deck. Make sure your fire pit is in a location where the flames and sparks will not hit any objects.
Under the Pit
If your fire pit is not built into the ground, make sure you have stone, brick, gravel, or concrete under the pit. This will help prevent the area below the pit from burning. You should NEVER place your pit over dry grass or over a wooden deck. This is because the heat from the base of it pit may spark a fire to the ground below it.
Weather
Do not use your fire pit if it is windy. The wind may push sparks from the fire to an area that is flammable.
When you are using your fire pit, you should notice the direction the breeze is blowing. You should move any object out of the way of where the breeze is blowing to help prevent a fire from occurring.
Lighting the Pit
When lighting your fire pit, use a commercial fire starter pack. Do NOT use lighter fluid or gasoline to light the pit or to relight fires. You should always keep water nearby just in case the fire inside of the pit spreads.
Before you use your fire pit, you should check your town’s laws on fire pits. Some towns require a permit and an inspection. If the unfortunate happens, call the experts at SERVPRO. We will restore your property and make it look “Like it never even happened.”
Types of Fire Damage
4/14/2017 (Permalink)
According to the NFPA, the number of fires your household can expect in an average lifetime is five. Any fire regardless of size will cause damage to your property. Fire damage is classified into six different classes and the type of fire damage can be classified in two ways.
Six Types of Fire Damage
Fires are classified into six different classes. These classes are Class A, Class B, Class C, Class D, Class E, and Class F.
- Class A: Involves flammable solids, plastics, paper, rubber, cloth, and wood
- Class B: Damage is caused by flammable solids that became liquids and by liquids. Examples of these types of substance are gasoline, petrol, oil, plastics and, paints. Cooking oils and fats are excluded from this class
- Class C: Involves flammable gasses such as hydrogen, natural gas, butane, and propane
- Class D: Damage is caused by combustible gasses such as potassium, sodium, and magnesium
- Class E: This class is a combination of Class A and Class B but, it involves electrical elements
- Class F: Damage is caused by cooking oils and fats. Cooking oils and fats are in their own class because the fire is usually hotter and more damage is caused.
Fire extinguishers are not a one size fits all. Make sure you read the label on your fire extinguisher to see what types of fires it can put out. Some fire extinguishers are water based which would not be safe to use on a Class E fire. Also, check the expiration date on your fire extinguisher to make sure it is still good to use in case of an emergency.
Types of Fire Damage
Most insurance companies use two classifications for fire damage. These categories are primary damage and secondary damage.
- Primary Damage: Damage is caused by direct flames to the structure or to objects inside of the structure
- Secondary Damage: Damage is caused by corrosive substances, smoke, and water from putting the fire out
Secondary damage typically causes the most damage to the structure. This is because soot and smoke can work its way throughout the structure.
If you experience a fire in your home, the first step you should take is to call the fire department. Your second step should be to reach out to your insurance agent. Your final step should be calling SERVPRO. All SERVPRO franchises are available 24/7 with highly trained restoration technicians. SERVPRO specializes in fire and water damage and will get your property looking “Like it never even happened”.
