What To Do After Water Damage In Your Home

9/20/2024 (Permalink)

One of the most devastating things you can experience is water damage in your home. Leaking appliances, broken pipes, or more serious plumbing issues can all cause significant issues. Waiting to deal with the damage can make this much worse. Mold can start growing in as little as 24 hours, even with a small amount of water. Ignoring water damage can also lead to safety hazards and structural problems.

This is why it's crucial to do some simple steps immediately after finding a water leak in your home, regardless of the severity. Please remember that contacting a professional restoration company is crucial in almost all water damage events to ensure it's effectively dealt with.

3 Steps To Take After Water Damage

  1. Stop the Water Flow: The first step is to identify the source of the water and try to stop it. If it's a leaky pipe, closing the valve would be the best action. If you can't identify the source, contacting the 24/7 emergency restoration experts at SERVPRO® should be your first step.
  2. Contact Insurance Company: If you're a homeowner, most water damage issues are covered by insurance. Contact your agent immediately to inquire about the policy for your type of water damage. A claim may be possible, and acting fast is the best way to make it happen.
  3. Call 24/7 Emergency Services: At SERVPRO, we offer 24/7 water damage restoration services to help you in a water emergency. We can be onsite to assist with stopping the water flow, removing the standing water, and beginning the restoration process.

What Are The Types of Water Damage?

Water damage is one of the most common types in commercial and residential properties. There are many things to look out for regarding water damage, including the category of water, which refers to the source of the water and any other potential contaminants.

Category 1 Water Damage: Clean Water

This water originates from a sanitary source and poses no substantial risk if exposed. Examples include water supply lines, melting ice, rainwater, and toilet tanks. During category 1 water damage, our restoration team at SERVPRO can save and dry affected materials rather than have to replace them.

Category 2 Water Damage: Grey Water

This type of water damage is known as "grey" water and contains significant contaminants. If contact is made, it is more likely to cause sickness or discomfort. It can be caused by a dishwasher or washing machine overflowing, a toilet bowl overflowing after use, or hydrostatic pressure seepage. When this water damage occurs, our restoration process will be more invasive, including removing carpeting and disinfecting materials.

Category 3 Water Damage: Black Water

Lastly, "grossly" contaminated water is referred to as black water. This is when the water can contain extremely harmful agents that could cause adverse reactions if contact is made. Examples of this type of water damage include sewage, waste line backflows, seawater, and rain from tropical storms.

Atlantic Hurricane Season 2022 Update

9/2/2022 (Permalink)

National Hurricane Center hurricane tracking image showing 3 storm systems that are being tracked in the Atlantic Ocean. SERVPRO Team Luzzi is available to help when storm damage occurs. Call us 24/7

The Atlantic storm season of 2022 has been unpredictably quiet. For the first time since 1997 there were no named storms in August and until this point there have only been 4 named storms. Tropical Storm Danielle was recently named on September 1st and is only the fourth tropical depression to form in the Atlantic in 2022. Danielle will remain at sea and is not a threat to land. Meteorologist are currently tracking two other storm systems but conditions in the Atlantic Ocean are still not perfect for creating tropical depressions. Although the warm waters of the Atlantic are ripe for fueling hurricane activity the air is dry and dusty which lessens the chances of tropical storm formation. Despite these conditions it is more likely than not that disturbance number one in the image shown will become the fifth named storm of the season, Earl. It is still far too early to tell the path this storm system will take, it is moving slowing west to northwest and it looks like it will pass north of the Caribbean islands. If the storm continues on its current trajectory there is a chance parts of the east coast could be affected so we will be keeping an eye on this storm so we are prepared for whatever it might bring.

It is a well known fact that tropical storm systems of the last 3 decades have been wetter and have brought more water damage than storms of the past. There are many reasons for this devastation but most scientist point to man-made climate change as the biggest catalyst for the increased rainfall and storm surge witnessed in almost all of the major storms of the 21st century.

As water damage restoration experts we will be prepared for intense weather any time of year. We are available for preliminary assessment of your property before a storm strikes and can even provide preventative measures to stop damage before it happens.

After making landfall and soaking the southern counties of Florida, the first named storm in the 2022 Hurricane Season formed. It drenched southern Florida with record-breaking rains. As Tropical Storm Alex moves out into the Atlantic, it is no longer a threat to further damage on land. The National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration revised their forecast for hurricane activity for this season to include more active storms than they had previously predicted. According to the Colorado State University scientist, there will be 20 named hurricanes, 10 hurricanes and 5 hurricanes that reach category 3 strength.

SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties can help in case of a major hurricane in New England, or elsewhere in the United States. We know how many people and how much equipment is needed to restore property after a hurricane. When called upon to manage a restoration team, we have years of experience which can be extremely valuable when attempting to restore property on a large scale.

Property owners should make flooding repairs and damage their top priority during major hurricanes and rain events. While many are concerned about the impact of winds and downed trees on their homes, flooding can cause much more damage and be even more destructive to a house or commercial property during a tropical storm or hurricane. Recent years have seen the greatest property damage after large hurricanes made landfall. Although they were weaker, large amounts of rain continued to fall. Each year, flash flooding events cause millions of dollars in property damage.

We hope none of the major hurricanes that are predicted for this hurricane season make landfall, but in the event they do... we will be ready to assist 24/7/365.

Indoor flood caused by broken pipes Without extraction, dragging wet carpets and rugs from a property can cause water damage and worsen an already difficult situation.

SERVPRO is a water extraction expert company that extracts water from carpets and rugs that have been soaked.

This can be a problem for property managers, adjusters, insurance agents and other professionals. It will almost certainly end up being thrown out. First, a heavy carpet or rug that is wet requires more effort to move and remove.

Second, water extraction reduces the weight significantly. This makes it easier for technicians to lift the material and reduces injuries on site. By removing water, we can reduce the total weight of the waste, which helps to lower waste removal fees.

We are effectively removing all water from carpets and rugs that have been wet. This is an essential step to prevent mold growth and structural damage.

SERVPRO Offers Quick and Efficient Water Removal from North Kingston Homes

Water removal from your North Kingston home needs to happen fast to prevent any secondary damage to the structure. Hiring a professional restoration company like SERVPRO can help you not only to get rid of the water but also residual moisture and lingering odors.

After water removal from your North Kingston home, SERVPRO technicians ensure that the structure and contents are dried properly. We use various equipment such as dehumidifiers, air movers, and heating equipment to create conditions that favor faster drying during water cleanup. Higher humidity of air slows down the drying process, and it is important to control it for faster drying.

Common Terms You Will Hear SERVPRO Techs Use During Water Damage Remediation of your North Kingston Home

Drying is a major part of the restoration process. SERVPRO techs can dry the structures so efficiently as they understand Psychrometry- the study of air and its properties. Understanding some terms might help you understand the process better.

  • Humidity ratio- It is the actual amount of moisture in the air. It is represented in grains of moisture per pound (gpp) of air. SERVPRO techs aim to create conditions with a low humidity ratio so that drying can be faster during water damage repairs at your North Kingston home.
  • Relative humidity (RH)- The quantity of moisture the air currently holds at a given temperature. It is usually represented as a percentage of the maximum moisture the air can hold when saturated at the same temperature. SERVPRO technicians try to control the RH of the air by altering the temperature using portable heaters.
  • Dew Point- The temperature at which water vapor from air begins to condense. SERVPRO tech always keeps the drying temperature above the dew point to avoid condensate formation.

Weighted extractors play a significant role in reducing trapped moisture in carpeted floors and the other elements of these flooring systems. Often, these machines work by the weight of the operating technician standing on the unit. With an onboard vacuum, the extractor forces carpet and padding against the subflooring beyond to force trapped moisture to the surface for removal.

Preserving the History of Kingston with Protected Landmarks

The majority of the Kingston village became part of this established historic district in 1959, earmarking many properties to be landmarks or culturally significant to the history of Washington County, Kingston, or the country. While many of these structures can be attractive to those studying multiple types of architecture, such as Greek Revival, Victorian, and Colonial, some have a history that makes them tourist attractions. Some of these locations include:

  • Elisha Reynolds House – Constructed in 1738, this would be the home of many higher political figures in Rhode Island. It would also be the final stop for George Washington and his officers on the way to Newport to meet with Rochambeau and plan the Siege of Yorktown.
  • Tootell House – Many others have taken to calling this well-known property King's Row or Hedgerow over the years. It was built in the early 1930s and featured a distinct Colonial Revival architecture. It has been a historic landmark and attraction since mid-2000.
  • Washington County Courthouse – Constructed in 1892, has been deemed a historical landmark for the state since 1992. The building features Romanesque architecture and now exists as the Courthouse Center for the Arts.

How Can Trapped Water Get Removed During Water Mitigation?

When surface water and moisture migrate into materials and become trapped, this can be a more substantial concern for responding technicians. Water mitigation for North Kingston homes often focuses on several surface treatment strategies culminating in the water removal services for trapped moisture pockets in porous flooring and wall system materials.

How Do Floor Drying Mats Work?

The objective of drying mats is to bring the relative humidity value of hardwoods back to their desired range. It is only then can the materials get preserved and protected. Prolonged exposure and oversaturation can lead to warping and bloating of planks, making them impossible to restore. Mats get placed perpendicularly to the seams of the floor plank to maximize their output and production over multiple interlocking flooring pieces. Tenting allows us to remove trapped moisture more efficiently and continually monitor drying progress.

Because of how destructive trapped water and standing water can be, water mitigation for North Kingston properties fixates on water removal services and clean-up strategies. Our experienced SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties team of professionals can help however the property needs at (401) 847-8145.

Why is Water Removal & Drying in Newport so Difficult in Humid Conditions?

Water from a leaking pipe or overflowing basin can soak a floor in no time at all. It is essential to remove all of the access water as soon as possible. Many clients mop up the water and then wait for the floor and carpet to dry independently.

SERVPRO is often called a few days later after the initial water removal in Newport homes. Homeowners are concerned that the carpets and flooring are still wet, and often there is already a musty smell. Conditions inside the house, especially in the area of the leak, are very humid.

The musty smell indicates that mold colonies have already begun growing. The damage to carpeting, drywall, and even subfloor may require replacement. High humidity in a room lowers the rate of drying significantly. SERVPRO can immediately –

  • Install high capacity dehumidifiers to dry the air
  • Add high capacity air movers to blow dry air over the flooring
  • Float carpets to accelerate drying and inspect cavities for moisture.
  • Measure the relative humidity as water is drawn from flooring materials and walls

Once everything is dry, we inspect all contents and structure for permanent damage signs and prepare recommendations for repairs and restoration.

North Kingston, formerly Kings Towne, was founded in 1674 and is part of the Providence metropolitan area. Approximately 27,000 people are living in North Kingston. The Providence metro area includes almost all of Rhode Island, including eight counties in two states, and has about 1.6 million people living in the area. North Kingston is in Washington County, Rhode Island.

There are several interesting activities for locals and tourists in and around North Kingston. We have included a few of them and provided more details about several.

  • Casey Farms
  • Davis Memorial Wildlife Refuge
  • Historic Wickford
  • Wilson Park
  • Smith's Castle
  • Biomes Marine Biology Center
  • Gilbert Stuart Museum

Casey Farms

Dating from the eighteenth century, the Casey farm produces organically grown produce sold at a local farmer's market and produce from six other area farms. There are online tours available and events organized throughout the year. Casey Farms is one of the oldest operating farms in the New England region.

Davis Memorial Wildlife Refuge

The Davis Memorial Wildlife Refuge offers hiking above the Hunt River through wooded areas and wetlands. There are also points to launch canoes and kayaks to explore the wetlands. The refuge does not allow motorized boats in the wetlands.

Historic Wickford

The village of Wickford is one of the oldest colonial towns in the country. Visitors can enjoy viewing historic homes and public buildings while learning about the village's maritime past and the area. There are several interesting walking tours available to help visitors learn about the houses and the village's development.

Wilson Park

Wilson Park in North Kingston covers 49 acres. The park is a multi-use recreational park offering playgrounds, many sports activities, including baseball and tennis.

There are boat ramps and free trailer parking.

There are also short-cycling, skating, and hiking trails within the park.

Gilbert Stuart Museum

The Gilbert Stuart Museum in nearby Saunderstown features an authentically furnished and restored home built-in 1750. There is also a working gristmill, woodland trails, gardens, and art displays from the period. The museum is situated on 23 acres of woodlands.

The museum depends on membership support and appreciates the generosity of visitors.

Basements Take More Time to Dry Than the Rest of the House

Many of our North Kingston clients express concerns about why it takes longer to dry their basements than the rest of the house after a water leak. All of the excess water has been removed. Only moisture in the air, moisture in the structure, and moisture in the contents remain.

SERVPRO trains our water removal technicians in Psychometrics, which is the management of three conditions –

  • Humidity,
  • Airflow and
  • Temperature.

Warmer temperatures can hold more water than cooler air typically found in basements. Evaporation of moisture in cooler conditions takes longer in colder air. Drying the contents, including flooring materials and structures in basements, is less efficient than other rooms in the home at lower temperatures.

How Does Response Speed Influence Water Damage Restoration In Bristol Properties?

8/16/2020 (Permalink)

puddle of water sitting on a wood floor of a room Water damage can ruin parts of your property without proper removal. Contact SERVPRO for professional water damage restoration.

SERVPRO Helps Manage All Aspects of Water Damage Repair Including Managing Speed and Other Aspects of the Restoration

Stopping incidents that lead to water damage in Bristol properties from happening is the ideal situation for a property owner. However, that is not always possible, and when an incident happens, you may opt for a speedy response as the next best thing. However, you might have questions on the benefits you get, as well as the shortcomings you might expect, if any.

How can a fast response lead to more damages?

When performing the water damage restoration, your Bristol property requires fast action and has many advantages. However, some aspects of the remediation may require moderation because speed may do more harm than good. Some steps, such as drying wood, which swells when wet, or general moisture removal by manipulating air movements, might require you to slow down to avoid problems such as:

  • Wooden surfaces cracking
  • Warping of wooden structural supports
  • Condensation collecting on dry surfaces

Cracking or warping in wood happens because of stresses that develop when exposed surfaces dry faster and thus shrink, while the wetter interior surfaces remain the same. Our SERVPRO technicians use unique approaches to sustain faster drying while avoiding the negative aspects. For instance, we can set up drying chambers to help balance the humidity around the wooden materials during drying. We also do calculations to establish the right ratio of air movers and dehumidifiers to prevent condensation of the evaporated moisture.

What are the benefits of speedy restoration?

  • Preventing mold development
  • Halting moisture migration to hidden areas
  • Prevention of bad odor

Since the combined effects of all these aspects determine how bad the water damage turns out, preventing them from developing minimizes the inconveniences faced.

When not sure of the best approach to fix your water-damaged property, SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties can help. You can reach us at (401) 847-8145, any time. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Can Flooring Impacted by a Severe Water Leak be Saved?

6/25/2020 (Permalink)

water damaged room; flooring stripped to subfloor; baseboards removed Water damages flooring materials. SERVPRO knows how to make it, "Like it never even happened."

It is Possible to Save Flooring in Your North Kingston Home That Has Been Affected by Big Water Leaks

Whenever a pipe in your North Kingston home ruptures, your floors are often suddenly covered in inches or even feet of water, and water can quickly inundate your carpeting, wooden floors, tilework, and subfloors. Experts estimate that this catastrophic issue could result in more than 160 gallons of water per hour leaking into your residence. In a matter of hours, this could rapidly produce thousands of gallons of standing water in your home. Luckily, trained professionals can quickly remediate clean water damage if you call them soon enough. Water cleanup services like SERVPRO can help and save most kinds of floors.

How Does Water Damage My Carpets, Wooden and Hard Floors, and Subfloors?

SERVPRO, a North Kingston water cleanup company, has encountered various types of water damage affecting flooring. Our experience with water damage has ranged from relatively minor in effect to quite severe. Of course, each flooring material handles water exposure differently, and some react to it better than others. Some of the forms of water-related damage that affect carpeting are:

  • Bubbling from water washing away the adhesive that binds it to the subfloor
  • Delamination, or when the primary and secondary backing layers of carpeting separate
  • Latex deterioration that leads to the loss of carpet fibers and reduces carpeting’s overall integrity

Although these effects can force you to replace this floor covering, you can usually avoid experiencing them if you address your standing water issue quickly.

Water’s impact on wooden flooring often depends on the construction, but the damage is usually more severe and costly. Moreover, it does not take long for these effects to result. A few examples of wood floor impairments due to water exposure are:

  • Water stains or discoloration
  • Swelling and warping, or deformation, of the wood
  • Buckling that tents, or forces upward, floor sections at joints where they meet and at the walls
  • Delamination of particleboard or oriented strand board (OSB) layers
  • Dry rot resulting from fungal growths

If water ever covers your wood flooring, remember that the faster cleaning occurs, the less damage it usually does. The longer the liquid remains on floors, the more their wooden surfaces absorb. The water causes the wood segments of your flooring to change shape and eventually buckle against each other—also, ground coverings comprising weaker wood products like particleboard and OSB. Glued-together layers, which are more likely to delaminate, the more prolonged exposure to water occurs, compose these boards.

Hard flooring, like concrete, asphalt or vinyl tiles, and ceramic tiles, is much more resilient to water damage in North Kingston than carpet or wood floors. Often, it is also much simpler and less expensive to remediate. With that said, however, these ground coverings are harmed by water in the following ways:

  • Blistering or flaking of painted concrete surfaces
  • Mineral deposits from evaporated water in concrete
  • Mold growth fostered by dirty, wet surfaces
  • Separation of vinyl and ceramic tiles from the floor
  • Warping and expansion of subflooring

Concrete and asphalt tile floors are least at risk of substantial water damage. Concrete floors mostly suffer minor surface cosmetic issues like paint flaking and calcium deposits. Often, water can only remove the finish from asphalt tiles. Since the adhesive of vinyl tiles dissolves relatively quickly, the tiles themselves are prone to separating from flooring if submerged for a sufficient period. Water can penetrate the grouting between ceramic tiles, causing the subflooring to swell and warp and break away from the floor.

What Can SERVPRO Do to Save Your Flooring?

When dealing with water-damaged flooring, SERVPRO employs various advanced tools and methods. Once our technicians extract all standing water with truck-mounted/portable extractors or wet vacs, they get to work on remediating your floors. Some of the tools and techniques they use to do the latter are:

  • Wands using hot water extraction and shampoo to clean and extract excess water from glued-down carpets
  • Heavier extraction devices to squeeze excess water out of thicker carpeting and padding
  • Moisture meters that identify and measure moisture levels in affected flooring and subflooring
  • Injectidry panel drying systems that dry out subflooring

What Is The Best Method to Remove Water From My Home?

Bring in SERVPRO for Professional Restoration in Your North Kingston Residence

Water intrusions like cracked pipes or failed appliances are far more common in North Kingston homes than flooding from a storm. Our restoration teams train extensively to return each one to its original, pre-water spill condition.

How Quickly Can SERVPRO Get This Done?

Removal is the first step when it comes to North Kingston water restoration. SERVPRO technicians have a large inventory of pumps and extractors to pull water out of carpets and wood flooring to restore them to full usefulness in about a week normally.

With the Water Gone, how do your Teams Restore the Rest of My Property?

The key now, is drying both the structure and the property inside your home. To do it quickly and without causing further damage, technicians use three devices: air movers, dehumidifiers, and fans.

  • Air movers use a warm, dry flow of air to push moisture out of property like drywall and wood furniture and into the air.
  • Dehumidifiers draw moisture from the air and more from nearby property items.
  • Fans pull the already damp air out of the home and push it outside, which allows the air movers and dehumidifiers to work more efficiently.

Unchecked Water Issues in the North Kingston Home are More Likely to Get Worse than Better

What prevents water from evaporating naturally in a home environment?

Without the conditions for evaporation, existing water damage in your North Kingston home can stagnate, damage material construction, and cause unpleasant odors. In some cases, water may be leaking faster than it is evaporating. In extreme situations, this can lead to flooding, but for many homeowners, it results in persistent minor water issues that can be difficult to diagnose.

What are the tell-tale signs of a water issue in my home?

    •    Unpleasant odors in some areas of the house.
    •    Discoloration of paintwork which is generally at the lower and upper joints
    •    Visible signs of moisture, damp spots or condensation on walls during warmer weather
    •    Bubbling effects on ceilings below wet rooms or warping floors beneath your feet
    •    High humidity levels that are inconsistent with other rooms in the property

What should I do if I suspect water leaks in my property?

If you notice any symptoms that could be the result of a water issue, it is vital that you intervene quickly to prevent long-term harm. Our technicians can trace the symptoms of water problems back to its source using our knowledge of water migration as well as professional equipment like moisture sensors, meters, and probes. By tracing water back to the source, we can address the cause before implementing an effective drying procedure.

How to dry out enclosed spaces in the home?

In cavities of the home, evaporated moisture has nowhere to go, which can result in condensation on outer walls leading to damp spots. Our technicians can set up a closed-drying system to create artificial ventilation and warmth to dry the area. For cavities, we can access the wall using injectidry nozzles to circulate warm, dry air into wall cavities without needing to remove building materials.

An untreated water issue can lead to high restoration costs in the future, contact SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties at (401) 847-8145 to stop them at the source.

Fast Response with Research-Based Protocols

Prompt addressing of the water damage is one of the most accurate predictors of a successful outcome. SERVPRO equips its workers with powerful extractors to suction the water off of surfaces, and even out of multi-layered structures like hardwood floors. We rely not on a visual assessment of our water removal success, but of a scientifically grounded approach that uses moisture detection and measurement devices to provide data. We use initial testing results and regular monitoring to set appropriate drying goals and prove we are achieving the goals.

Count on professionalism, compassion, and focus when the team from SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties arrives to manage your water damage scenario. Contact us at (401) 847-8145 at any time of the day or night.

Water Damage In A New England Winter

12/30/2019 (Permalink)

Cars move slowly on a snow New England highway road. How has your winter been so far? We are here to help when needed!

The end of 2019 has given us a preview into what the early months and the winter of 2020 will be like. Similar to the last few winters we have experienced temperature swings from warm to cold and back again. This type of weather can be difficult to adjust to, many people find they are more prone to getting sick with the flu when temperatures fluctuate in this manner. Homes and commercial properties also have to adjust to these temperature swings and the stress caused on an older structure or older heating system can lead to damage later on down the road. If you experience these issues we can help! Our goal is to provide a complete restoration service and our construction services are second to none. In fact, our experience in disaster restoration makes us the perfect fit for these types of projects.

Water Damage Season Is Here

12/1/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO techs and homeowners look over water damage to a home. If you experience water damage this winter call us immediately, we are here to help!

As the northeast braces for the first winter storm of the season, it has been preceded by below-freezing temperatures. When the temperature drops this low many homes and businesses become susceptible to potential water damage.  Many times this comes in the form of a burst pipe. When poorly insulated cooper or pex water pipes are exposed to freezing temperatures the water inside the pipe can freeze and expand causing the pipe to crack and burst. If this burst goes unnoticed for a long enough period of time the potential for water damage to the structure of the building grows exponentially. This is why it is so important to call an experienced restoration company. If you experience water damage from a burst pipe this winter, contact us immediately!

A Professional Restoration Company Can Save You Money In A Water Damage

3/6/2019 (Permalink)

When your home or business is struck by a water damage event, such as a flood, burst pipe, or roof leak, you will see many restoration options in a google search. Here is why it is so important to carefully consider the company you choose to repair your property.

1. Evaluating exactly what can and cannot be saved in the property is crucial. This is where our experienced managers quickly determine the best course of action to save as much of the structure as possible. This first step can determine a huge chunk of your upfront costs for repair and materials for replacement.

2. Drying Equipment. If the company you hire is not using the best drying and air scrubbing equipment available, chances are they will need to use that equipment on your property for a longer period of time, costing you more money. Our techs are trained to work and act efficiently and we invest in the best possible restoration equipment so everything we do is efficient. In the long run, this is the best possible way to save our client's money.

3. We offer all phases of restoration and reconstruction services. Again, as we strive to be an efficient company we employ a team of talented and experienced craftsmen and carpenters to remove the need to hire subcontractors on your project and to be 100% sure your job will be completed professionally.

2018 Report: Above Average Rainfall Throughout the Northeast

6/14/2018 (Permalink)

It seems like it is raining every other day here in the northeast lately, so over here in our SERVPRO® of Newport & Bristol Counties office, we decided to figure out just how much more rain has fallen in 2018. Using tools available on the National Weather Service website we were able to generate this map showing rainfall accumulation for the year and comparing it to the average amount of rain for this time of year. As you can see rainfall along the coastal regions of Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New York are 4"-12" above average! This will be something to keep an eye on going into what many believe will be a busy hurricane season this year. If your home or business is near any of our located near a resevour, river, lake or pond keep our number on hand, we will continue to monitor the weather!

Water Extraction Reduces Overall Costs

5/8/2018 (Permalink)

As an insurance agent, adjuster or property manager you may wonder why SERVPRO extracts water from soaked rugs and carpets that will most likely end up being thrown away anyway! There are a few reasons for this; first, the weight of a wet carpet or rug requires more manpower to remove and move, so extracting water reduces the weight of the carpets to be removed significantly. This not only makes the material easier to lift and requires fewer technicians but it is safer for our technicians to handle, reducing on-site injuries. Also, by removing the weight of the water we reduce the amount of total weight of the waste removed, helping to keep waste removal fees down. Finally, by extracting and removing the water from wet carpets and rugs we are removing the water from the property entirely! The importance of this cannot be understated because removing water from the property quickly is the first step in preventing further structural damage and mold growth. Dragging wet rugs and carpets from a property without extraction can leave water behind and exasperate an already dire situation.

Flooded House, Now What!

10/23/2017 (Permalink)

All too often homeowners wait too long before contacting a water damage mitigation expert in the event of a flood. A good example is when an appliance (like the dishwasher or washing machine) breaks and leaks throughout the house. If you are lucky you realize the leak right away and are able to fix the problem before any real damage is done. But many times a small leak goes undetected for weeks until the leak expands and parts of the home begin to show water damage.

In one particular example, a two-story single family home was set up with the washer and dryer on the second floor. The homeowners left the machine running before leaving for the day and returned home to find the supply hose had become detached from the washing machine and was draining onto the carpets and throughout the house.

They attempted to dry the mess themselves and waited 5 days before contacting SERVPRO of Newport & Bristol Counties multiplying the problem and damage to their home.

Winter Water Damage Tips

12/22/2016 (Permalink)

This winter it is extremely important to make sure you have your home or business prepared for colder weather. Such failure can cause pipes to break causing significant damage to your home or business.

It is important to have a good relationship with a disaster restoration company. This can speed up the process when something does happen that you already know who to call and what the process will be to get your home clean and back to normal.

Another important area of focus is disaster preparedness. One question you can ask yourself, "Do you know where all of your critical shut off valves are for your home or business." If you you do not know, it is important to work with someone like a plumber or someone from the utilities department that can help assist you with locating these shut off's.

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us at anytime.

Mold Prevention Tips

11/21/2015 (Permalink)

WHY PREVENT MOLD?

Mold is a type of fungus. In nature, mold eats dead plants and animals, serving an important purpose. Mold can grow indoors, however, where it does not serve a purpose but can destroy materials. It can damage materials in your home. It can ruin carpet, even walls. Preventing mold is important because if mold takes hold, you can spend a fortune replacing ruined items.

Mold prevention is important because once it takes hold, it’s hard to get rid of it. If you see mold or notice a musty smell in your house, you have a mold problem and need to address it. If you don’t see or smell mold, you probably do not have a mold problem and you want to keep it that way. If you’re not sure if you have a mold problem, you can have a professional come in and conduct a test. Your home owner’s insurance may even pay for it.

HOW DO I PREVENT MOLD?

Mold requires organic material and moisture in order to grow and thrive. There is usually plenty of organic material in homes and it’s almost impossible to get rid of it all, so the key to mold prevention is eliminating excess moisture. Water leaks, high humidity and condensation all provide moisture that allows mold to grow. If your roof leaks or water comes in around windows, fix it. If humidity is high, invest in a dehumidifier.

If you experience flooding or a leak, you need to dry things out thoroughly. Use fans and a dehumidifier (or two), take up all carpet and remove all soaked objects until they can be dried. Some items may need to be discarded and replaced.

Make sure your home has adequate ventilation in areas like bathrooms, laundry rooms and attics. Energy efficient homes may hold moisture inside, in which case opening a window or turning on a fan when showering and cooking will help with mold prevention.

USE MATERIALS THAT PREVENT MOLD WHEN RENOVATING

You can purchase mold-resistant drywall or sheetrock, which are particularly useful in high-moisture areas like bathrooms and laundry rooms. Ask for mold-resistant products at your local home improvement store, or if you have a professional contractor handling your home renovations, ask him or her to use mold-resistant products whenever possible.

MONITOR INDOOR HUMIDITY

The Environmental Protection Agency recommends keeping indoor humidity between 30 and 60 percent. Purchase a moisture meter at your local hardware store and use humidifiers or dehumidifiers if necessary to keep the humidity at the right level to prevent mold.

DIRECT GROUND WATER AWAY FROM YOUR HOME

Another key to mold prevention is directing ground water away from your home. If the ground slopes toward your home, you’re likely to have leaking in your basement or in a crawlspace, which will lead to the growth of mold.

KEEP YOUR GUTTERS CLEAN

Clogged gutters often lead to leaky roofs. Prevent mold by preventing leaks. Clean your gutters regularly and if you notice stains on your ceiling, check the gutters for clogs and check the roof right away for leaks.

Beware of Spring Flooding

3/12/2015 (Permalink)

As the weather warms and the snow melts beware of the potential water damage that may be brought on by local flooding. Besides the major threat of river and run-off flooding, your home or business could fall victim to the amount of water that is created by melting snow adjacent to structures. To reduce the risk of water damage try to remove melting snow that is too close to your home or business so that it may melt into the ground and not into your basement!

SERVPRO of Newport and Bristol Counties is available to help if you experience any flooding in your home or business. We have the team and equipment to help with any size loss. Our team is quick and efficient to help put your home back together.
